# The minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says president Cyril Ramaphosa will soon address the nation on the government’s approach to managing migration. The announcement comes amid growing tensions over immigration and calls by anti-immigration groups for a national shutdown. Ntshavheni told the media law enforcement agencies are ready to act against anyone who breaks the law, regardless of nationality, while investigations into those behind the unrest continue:
# Lieutenant-Colonel Kwazikwakhe Sibiya of the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Unit in Durban has told the Madlanga Commission he saw nothing wrong at the time with the decision to move 541 kilograms of seized cocaine to Port Shepstone. Commissioner Sesi Baloyi raised concerns that officers handling the exhibits could have compromised potential DNA and fingerprint evidence, despite wearing protective gloves throughout. Sibiya said his role was minimal and that he simply followed instructions:
# The DA has welcomed the Special Investigating Unit’s probe into alleged maladministration and unlawful conduct by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority and the Unemployment Insurance Fund. It will look into the procurement and contracting of training services. Spokesperson Ian Cameron says public money meant to help unemployed citizens was placed into a project that has, by all accounts, failed the very people it was meant to empower:
# Mineral and Petroleum Resources minister Gwede Mantashe says the rollout of South Africa’s new online mining licensing system is progressing steadily, with applications now being processed digitally in the Western Cape. Parliament heard that lessons from the province will help speed up implementation nationwide. Mantashe also confirmed that the Mineral Resources Development Bill is being refined before submission to Cabinet. Meanwhile, mining contributed 477-billion-rand to the economy in 2025, with export revenues rising to 649-billion-rand and royalties reaching 11.8-billion-rand.
# Motorsport: Formula One will continue racing in Las Vegas through to 2037 after agreeing to a ten-year contract extension. The famed Nevada Strip, which first hosted a Grand Prix in 2023, is one of three US races on the calendar, alongside Austin and Miami. F1 president Stefano Domenicali says the event has established itself as a premier destination for great racing, world-class entertainment, global business leaders and A-list celebrities. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the race in 2023 and 2025, with Mercedes’ George Russell winning in 2024.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-45-cents against the rand and the euro at 19-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-3-cents and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-729-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-361-dollars-31-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 93-dollars-4-cents a barrel.
