In this bulletin:
# Rise Mzansi calls for an unhindered start to the Madlanga commission’s proceedings
# Athletics: South Africa’s Zakithi Nene qualifies for the final of the 400-metres in Tokyo
# And former Hollywood heartthrob Robert Redford dies at 89
# Rise Mzansi says there is an urgent need to restore the criminal justice system as the Madlanga commission begins its work at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria tomorrow. The party calls for the commission probing allegations raised by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, to investigate the police’s crime intelligence division, citing reports of poor performance and widespread corruption. Rise Mzansi’s Makashule Gana criticised acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia for not providing information on recent crime intelligence arrests:
# ActionSA says it will file a complaint with the Public Protector after revelations that the National Treasury has failed to act on corruption cases flagged by the Special Investigating Unit. Of 467 suppliers and individuals recommended for blacklisting, only one is on Treasury’s Restricted Suppliers Register. ActionSA says this represents systemic maladministration, with just 44 dismissals out of one-thousand-278 disciplinary referrals. The party blames the Treasury, the Presidency, and accounting officials for the failure of consequence management.
# The DA in the Western Cape has condemned a recent surge of brutal violence in Kraaifontein, Mfuleni, and Steenberg in Cape Town, where several people were killed and injured in suspected gang-related attacks. According to the party, under-resourced and overstretched police stations are unable to respond effectively. The DA’s Benedicta van Minnen calls on national government to provide more resources and give local municipalities greater powers to improve safety:
# Athletics: South Africa’s Zakithi Nene qualified for the final of the men’s 400-metres at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He won his heat in the fifth-fastest time, while compatriot Lythe Pillay‘s time was too slow. Three athletes from Botswana will run in the title race, with Busang Kebinatshipi posting the world-leading time of 43.61-seconds in his heat. He will be joined by compatriots Bayapo Ndori and Lee Eppie. Among the other finalists are Jamaika’s Rusheen McDonald, American Jacory Patterson and local athlete Yuki Nakajima.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-35-cents and the euro at 20-rand-54-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-70-cents and Bitcoin trades at 115-thousand-72-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-698-dollars-14-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-83-cents a barrel.
# And we end on a sad note: Former Hollywood heartthrob Robert Redford has died at the age of 89. His publicist, Cindi Berger, told CNN he passed away at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, surrounded by those he loved. Known for his starring roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men, Redford also directed award-winning films such as Ordinary People and A River Runs Through It. He was also a dedicated environmentalist and led efforts to preserve the natural landscape of Utah and the American West.
