# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says coordinated efforts between national, provincial, and local government are key to improving service delivery. Responding to questions in the National Council of Provinces, Mashatile highlighted the clean cities and towns campaign, which promotes cleaner, safer, and more inclusive spaces. He added that interventions in struggling municipalities, including training and interviews for mayors and officials, are helping ensure accountability and that essential services reach communities efficiently:
# AfriForum Youth and North-West University students protested at the Potchefstroom campus today, demanding a ban on the Kill the Boer chant. A petition with over six-thousand signatures was handed to university management after the chant was sung on campus in June. Protesters say the university’s silence on the issue is unacceptable. AfriForum Youth’s Yvonne Gerber insists the university must condemn the chant outright and take disciplinary action against those involved:
# The Gauteng Education Department has dismissed a student governing body-appointed teacher from Sunward Park High School in Boksburg after allegations of sexually assaulting and verbally abusing school girls. The teacher was suspended last month. He was found guilty of misconduct in absentia at a disciplinary hearing, and fired. Spokesperson Steve Mabona says MEC Matome Chiloane has condemned the actions, saying schools must remain safe spaces:
# Rugby: Springbok Women coach Swys de Bruin has picked a seven-one split on the bench for Saturday’s World Cup quarterfinal against New Zealand, with Eloïse Webb the only back player. Lock Nolusindiso Booi will captain the team which consists of the majority of players who beat Italy in a group match. De Bruin says they’ve decided on the bomb squad because of the profile of the team, who likes to dominate upfront. He describes playing a fresh pack in each half as a tactical decision.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-41-cents and the euro at 20-rand-43-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-61-cents and Bitcoin trades at 114-thousand-158-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-637-dollars-64-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-22-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Jagersfontein residents are marking the third anniversary of the dam collapse in the Free State. The mine dam wall broke in 2022, flooding parts of the town and affecting 140 families. Two people died and one remains missing. While 90 families accepted 150-million-rand rebuilding led by Jagersfontein Development Mine, others are pursuing legal compensation. The Human Rights Commission and civil society groups continue to monitor and call for the public release of the investigation report.
