Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA urges Parliament to end the power struggle between the acting Police minister and the national commissioner
# AfriForum alleges political shielding in the NPA’s handling of the Eastern Cape premier’s case
# And cricket: The Proteas chase a winning target of 132 in the first ODI against England
# The DA says Parliament’s portfolio committee on Police must urgently resolve a brewing power struggle between acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia and national police commissioner Fannie Masemola. The party’s Lisa Schickerling believes the dispute, sparked by the return of 121 political killings dockets to the KwaZulu-Natal task team, risks delaying investigations and eroding public trust in police:
# AfriForum says the National Prosecuting Authority’s claim that Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane is still under investigation, is suspicious. Mabuyane is accused of corruption linked to the unlawful distribution of funds by businessman Lonwabo Bam, including payments related to transport arrangements for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s funeral. AfriForum’s Barry Bateman says the private prosecution unit may consider prosecuting Mabuyane and other officials to ensure the case proceeds without political interference:
# The South African Tourism Board says Tourism minister Patricia de Lille’s reasons for dissolving the board fail the good cause test under the Tourism Act. Former board member Lawson Naidoo told Parliament the board was denied a chance to respond to the minister’s second letter. He cited resignations, suspensions, and operational challenges affecting the critical quarterly meeting:
# Global alliance for sustainable coal, FutureCoal, is calling on banks, insurers, and investors to fund coal fairly and responsibly. Chairperson Mike Teke says coal remains a vital energy source, supporting industries, jobs, and economic growth, especially in regions with limited alternatives. He urged financial institutions to back coal under FutureCoal’s sustainable coal stewardship framework, which promotes low-emission and advanced technologies, while ensuring coal works alongside renewables for long-term energy security.
# Cricket: South Africa chases a winning target of only 132 in the first one-day match against England at Headingley in Leeds. Temba Bavuma won the toss and sent the hosts in to bat first. Ben Duckett was the first to lose his wicket with just 13 runs on the board, whereafter England struggled to built partnerships. Their last wicket fell in the 25th over for a total of 131, with Jamie Smith top-scoring with 54. Spinner Keshav Maharaj took four wickets and Wiaan Mulder three.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-67-cents and the euro at 20-rand-63-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-70-cents and Bitcoin trades at 111-thousand-47-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-497-dollars-48-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 68-dollars-42-cents a barrel.
