# Dada Morero remains Johannesburg’s mayor as the DA’s motion of no confidence fails
# And the cold front in Cape Town intensifies
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has labelled the return of unspent service delivery funds to Treasury as treason against the people. Addressing the National Council of Provinces, Ramaphosa criticised poor spending on vital infrastructure, saying it erodes public trust in government. He cited mismanagement, weak planning, and poor capacity as key issues. Ramaphosa says government interventions, including budget monitoring and support teams, aim to strengthen municipalities and ensure better service delivery:
The DA has meanwhile called on Ramaphosa to fire Higher Education and Training minister Nobuhle Nkabane immediately, accusing her of lying to Parliament on two occasions. In an open letter, the party says Nkabane misled Parliament to hide her role in appointing ANC loyalists to Sector Education and Training Authority boards. The DA’s Karabo Khakhau says she also falsely claimed that advocate Terry Motau chaired the selection panel, which he laater denied.
# Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero has survived a motion of no confidence against him. The DA-sponsored motion failed, with 144 councillors voting against it, 75 in favour, and 43 abstaining. ActionSA, a key ANC ally, abstained, saying it could not defend Morero’s track record. The GOOD Party warned that removing the mayor would deepen instability in the city. With support from smaller parties, Morero remains in office despite growing calls for improved governance.
# The City of Cape Town is responding to localised flooding in several areas, including Parkwood, Imizamo Yethu, Hangberg, and Overcome Heights. Flood kits have been requested in informal settlements such as Lwandle, Macassar, and Khayelitsha. Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Sonica Lategan says two canals have overflowed, causing widespread flooding on roads. She urged residents to avoid flooded areas and waterways for their own safety:
# Soccer: Barcelona announced their long-awaited return to the new Camp Nou for a friendly on 10 August after years of work to expand and modernise the iconic stadium. The traditional pre-season Joan Gamper Trophy match will only mark the stadium’s partial reopening. Barca will have another month to continue work on the stadium after requesting to play their first three La Liga games of the upcoming season away from home. The project is due to finish in the summer of 2026 and boost Camp Nou’s capacity to 105-thousand.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-81-cents and the euro at 20-rand-67-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-25-cents and Bitcoin trades at 107-thousand-440-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-321-dollars-53-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-76-cents a barrel.
