# Police minister Senzo Mchunu says the Safe Schools Protocol signals a shared, practical commitment between the police and the Department of Basic Education to protect learners. Mchunu stressed the protocol must be felt in every classroom. He called on communities and parents to actively support the initiative, warning that violence, drugs, weapons, and extortion in schools, especially in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape, must be addressed:
# The Freedom Front Plus says its visit to the US is aimed at fostering economic growth and mutual respect, not seeking aid. Speaking at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC, party leader Corné Mulder called on the US to help open the door to opportunity for all South Africans. He believes the Afrikaner community is ready to help grow the economy and build a better future, but warns that race-based laws under the ANC is hurting progress:
Meanwhile, US president Donald Trump says a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was holding, shortly after he lashed out at both countries and cursed as he accused them of violating the truce. In a fast-moving series of declarations, the 79-year-old Republican, who was on his way to attend a NATO summit in The Hague in the Netherlands, posted on his Truth Social app that the ceasefire is in effect. Minutes earlier, he had castigated Iran and also close US ally Israel for violating a ceasefire he had originally announced late yesterday.
# Rugby: The British and Irish Lions warned Australia not to breach its contract by failing to release its international stars for all tour matches against Super Rugby teams. The Lions’ tour consists of three Tests against the Wallabies and six other encounters. Wallaby head coach Joe Schmidt apparently won’t allow some of his best players to play for their franchises to avoid them picking up injuries before the Tests. Lions CEO Ben Calveley says they want to play the toughest possible opposition to adequately prepare for the Wallabies.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-71-cents and the euro at 20-rand-59-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-14-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-376-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-303-dollars-77-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-94-cents a barrel.
# And finally: DA leader John Steenhuisen says the party remains committed to building a country where all South Africans have access to opportunity, dignity, and prosperity. He was speaking during the DA’s 25th anniversary celebration in Hanover Park, Cape Town, marked with a nationwide blanket drive to support vulnerable communities. Steenhuisen says the DA’s record in good service delivery shows what can be achieved. He promised to keep working to improve people’s lives nationwide:
