# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says the clean cities and towns campaign, launched in Kliptown, Soweto, will expand beyond Johannesburg. Speaking at the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, Mashatile said the campaign aims to promote cleaner, greener, and more inclusive communities. He stressed that the goal is for the government to work with residents to improve their environments:
# The Ministry of Transport is set to meet with the Road Accident Fund board on Tuesday. This follows the precautionary suspension of CEO Collins Letsaolo. The Transport Department also plans to finalise the Road Accident Benefit Scheme Bill, to make it easier for victims to claim benefits without expensive legal fees. Ministry spokesperson Collen Msibi says the meeting will assess the board’s ability to restore governance and ensure timely compensation for accident victims.
# The South African Weather Service has issued a warning of severe winter weather starting this weekend. A powerful weather system will bring heavy snow, cold temperatures, and strong winds across all provinces except Limpopo. The Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal face possible flooding from heavy rain. Farmers are urged to protect livestock. Forecaster Kevin Rae says Comrades Marathon runners can expect warm weather early Sunday, but colder, wetter conditions may move in later:
Roadrunning: Two-time Comrades marathon champion Tete Dijana is looking for a hat-trick victory this Sunday in the iconic ultra-marathon. Last year’s winner Piet Wiersma will also be defending his title in the 90-kilometre down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Other top male contenders include Joseph Manyedi, Dan Moselakwe, and Edward Mothibi. Speaking at the elite athletes’ media conference, Dijana vowed to correct past mistakes and reclaim the crown:
# The Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-77-cents and the euro at 20-rand-27-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-1-cent and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-353-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-338-dollars-96-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-90-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Former England football captain, David Beckham is said to be in line for a knighthood, with King Charles’ birthday honours list of the recipients to be published next week. Beckham was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2003. BBC Sport reports he is now in line to receive further recognition for both his football career and his contributions to British society. The 50-year-old Beckham retired in 2013 after playing 115 times for his country as well as for Manchester United, LA Galaxy, Paris St-Germain and AC Milan.
