# The High Court in the Western Cape has ruled Parliament acted unlawfully in appointing fired judge and MK Party deputy leader John Hlophe to the Judicial Service Commission. The court stated that a judge removed for misconduct cannot be entrusted with safeguarding judicial integrity. Hlophe was impeached for trying to influence two Constitutional Court judges in a case involving former president Jacob Zuma. Hlophe and his party have also been ordered to pay punitive legal costs for making insulting remarks during the proceedings.
# Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane has condemned the brutal murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, a Grade 8 learner from Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville. Likhona’s mutilated body was found in Roodepoort yesterday after she was reported missing on Saturday. No arrests have been made. The department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona says trauma support has been deployed to the school:
# The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has praised law enforcement officers for their hard work in keeping communities safe after more than 330 suspects were arrested during weekend operations. The arrests were for crimes such as drunk driving, drug possession, and selling liquor illegally. Ekurhuleni had 69 arrests, Tshwane 96, Sedibeng 80, West Rand 67, and Johannesburg 18. The department’s Ofentse Morwane says police are taking strong action, especially against drug and alcohol-related crimes.
# Tennis: Alexander Zverev secured a place in his seventh French Open quarter-final as his last-16 opponent Tallon Griekspoor retired injured in the second set. The German third seed, who lost to Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final, was leading 6-4, 3-0 when Dutchman Griekspoor called it quits on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Zverev will face either Novak Djokovic or Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the last eight as he continues his bid for a maiden Grand Slam title.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-88-cents and the euro at 20-rand-45-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-21-cents and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-156-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-376-dollars-90-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-45-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is switching focus from summer to winter. A review of winter statistics for the past three seasons show a decline in the number of structural fires from two-thousand-129 in 2022 to one-thousand-748 in 2024. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith says there was an increase in responses to motor vehicle accidents from one-thousand-883 in 2022 to two-thousand-147 in 2024:
