# Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi has announced the hiring of one-thousand-200 new doctors to help ease the shortage of healthcare workers. Motsoaledi says with the backing of the new budget, the National Health Council has approved the recruitment of he doctors, 200 nurses, and 250 other healthcare professionals at a cost of two-billion-rand:
# Cultural, Religious And Linguistic Communities chairperson Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva says commissions will soon investigate the handling of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso’s court case. This comes after his acquittal on 32 charges, including rape and human trafficking, after the trial dragged on in the Eastern Cape High Court for eight years. Mkhwanazi-Xaluva points to systematic failures in the justice system and calls the verdict a devastating blow, citing prosecution failures. She says the outcome deeply undermines justice and public trust:
# Several US senators have called for an investigation into whether president Donald Trump engaged in insider trading or market manipulation by encouraging people to buy stocks just before his dramatic reversal on global tariffs. The accusations came as Trump posted a few minutes after Wall Street opened that “IT’S TIME TO BUY”. A few hours later, he announced a 90-day suspension of additional tariffs against dozens of countries, with the exception of China, triggering a historic stock market rebound.
Meanwhile, the United States and Russia exchanged prisoners today, the second such swap since Trump returned to the White House as the two superpowers push for closer ties. Moscow released US-Russian ballet dancer and spa worker Ksenia Karelina, who had been detained in Russia after a sentence of 12 years on treason charges. In exchange, the United States released Arthur Petrov. The Russian-German citizen had been facing up to 20 years in a US jail for violating export controls.
# Athletics: Australian sprint prodigy Gout Gout dipped under the magic 10-second mark for the 100-meter twice today to showcase his burgeoning potential, but both times were wind-assisted so it did not officially count.
