# Police minister Senzo Mchunu has committed to enhancing police visibility and resources in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, following last week’s mass shooting which claimed 18 lives. The Police Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with local communities to combat crime and restore peace and security. During his visit to the victims’ families, Mchunu expressed his shock and condolences, acknowledging the community’s grief:
# The Judicial Service Commission will proceed with judges’ interviews next week without fired judge and MK Party deputy president John Hlophe. Chief Justice Mandisa Maya confirmed this decision was made by majority vote, despite threats of legal action from Hlophe’s party. The Western Cape High Court interdicted Hlophe from participating, but his absence does not affect the JSC’s ability to operate lawfully. The interviews are set to commence on Monday.
# Employment and Labour minister Nomakhosazana Meth has expressed concern over the exploitation of foreign workers in South Africa. The minister briefed the media following nationwide blitz inspections where some establishments were found to be in violation of immigration laws. Meth noted the increase in foreign nationals treated unfairly in various work places:
# Tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy and number three, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, will fight it out for the China Open crown in Beijing tomorrow. Alcaraz beat Russian Daniil Medvedev in straight sets today, while local wildcard Bu Yunchaokete gave Sinner a run for his money in the other semifinal before the Italian clinched the match. In the women’s game, 15th-seeded Spaniard Paula Badosa surprised second-seeded American Jessica Pegula in the round of 16, and will next face local player Zhang Shuai.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-37-cents and the euro at 19-rand-27-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-14-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-672-dollars-21-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-660-dollars-88-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-31-cents a barrel.
# And finally: An 81-year-old model has taken part in the Miss Universe Korea pageant in an attempt to become the world’s oldest Miss Universe contestant. Choi Soon-hwa did not win the crown, but was given the “best dresser” award during the event at a hotel in South Korea’s capital, Seoul. Choi worked in hospital care before beginning a modelling career in her 70s. She says people should look at her and realise you can live healthier and find joy when you challenge yourself to achieve a dream.
