# The United Democratic Movement’s acting secretary general, Zandile Phiri, has voiced concerns about South Africa’s deteriorating healthcare system, citing job cuts, maladministration, and poor conditions. Issues include the abandonment of the Kopano Hospital Complex in Welkom, unpaid bills causing emergency line disruptions in the Eastern Cape, and medicine shortages in Mpumalanga. She urges immediate government action to restore healthcare services:
# Western Cape MEC for Education, David Maynier says over the school holiday, matrics across the province will be attending Spring School to revise their work and prepare for the final exams ahead. The first paper of the 2024 National Senior Certificate exams, will commence on 21 October. Maynier says Grade 12 learners will have the opportunity to attend walk-in classes at their school, or at a hub with learners from several schools attending:
# Former president Donald Trump says he does not expect to run for election again in 2028 if he is defeated in this November’s US presidential poll. US law bars presidents from serving more than two terms, so Trump is not expected to run in 2028 if he wins, either. This is the second time in four days Trump has mentioned a chance of defeat. A CBS poll this weekend shows Kamala Harris leads Trump 52-percent to 48-percent nationally. An NBC poll shows Harris with a five-percentage point lead over Trump across the US.
# Cricket: Proteas white-ball coach Rob Walter was disappointed with their ODI series loss to Afghanistan, but remains hopeful that the challenging conditions will benefit the inexperienced players. The Proteas bounced back in Sunday’s dead rubber with a seven-wicket win against Afghanistan to secure a consolation victory. Walter hopes that the new crop of players will cope better with spin, with an eye on next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan, scheduled from 19 February to 9 March.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-31-cents and the euro at 19-rand-27-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-9-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-185-dollars-68-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-632-dollars-79-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-3-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The City of Tshwane says it recognises the vital role bees play in pollination and sustaining the local ecosystem. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, a third of the world’s food production depends on bees. Councillor Marika Kruger-Muller says it is imperative that Tshwane prioritises public safety by educating residents about which plants and flowers attract bees, and which species should be avoided near homes:
