# DA trade spokesperson Toby Chance has urged the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition to probe alleged corruption at the South African Bureau of Standards. Chance highlights concerns about the lack of a full board and a permanent CEO, citing claims of whistleblower victimisation and management failures. In response, the SABS insists it is addressing leadership gaps and recruitment transparently. Chance says the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry, and Competition supports efforts to stabilise governance across entities.
# Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has vowed to bring those responsible for the murder of seven family members in KwaZulu-Natal, to justice. The victims, including three children, were found shot dead in their home in the Hlokozi area of Highflats, on Wednesday. Mchunu expressed his condolences and condemned the killings as senseless and inhumane. Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi assured the public all resources will be mobilised to restore safety in the area:
# The National Treasury acknowledges credit ratings Fitch’s decision to keep South Africa’s long-term foreign and local currency debt ratings at BB with a stable outlook. The ratings agency says there are ongoing challenges, such as low economic growth, high debt and inequality, but highlights positives such as a good debt structure, strong institutions and credible monetary policy. The agency also recognises progress in reforms under Operation Vulindlela, improvements in electricity supply and the government’s focus on controlling spending and reducing borrowing.
# Britain’s Police and Crime minister, Diana Johnson had her bag stolen at a police conference in England this week, where she spoke about the growing problem of theft and shoplifting. Warwickshire Police say a 56-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and released on bail in connection with the incident. In her speech at the Police Superintendents’ Association conference Johnson said Britain has been gripped by an epidemic of anti-social behaviour, theft and shoplifting.
# Soccer: The Premier League season gets underway tomorrow. The highlight of day one is heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs, who open their campaign at the Free State Stadium against newly-promoted Marumo Gallants. The Amakhosi are desperate to end a near decade-long trophy drought. They have brought in Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi and he has made some new signings, like defender Inacio Miguel. The 28-year-old joined Chiefs from Angolan side Petro de Luanda and hopes for success in the PSL:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-70-cents and the euro at 19-rand-64-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-26-cents and Bitcoin trades at 58-thousand-250-dollars-59-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-576-dollars-58-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-93-cents a barrel.
