# The corruption case against suspended Pretoria chief magistrate Desmond Nair has been postponed to 26 September at the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court. The National Prosecuting Authority’s Henry Mamothame says Nair is accused of accepting 200-thousand-rand for security upgrades of his Gauteng home from Bosasa in September 2016, in exchange for judicial favours:
# The South African National Christian Forum has vowed to continue speaking out against injustice and bad leadership, particularly within the ANC, the EFF and the South African Communist Party. They criticised these parties for their alleged role in the collapse of VBS Mutual Bank, calling for the return of looted funds and compensation for victims. The forum’s president, Marothi Mashashane, encourages citizens to use their votes to hold corrupt leaders accountable and push for justice:
# ActionSA has launched an investigation targeting all cabinet ministers and deputy ministers, seeking detailed information on the qualifications and competencies of their support staff. This move follows recent concerns over possible cadre deployment and disregard for minimum qualification criteria, particularly in the Agriculture Ministry. ActionSA says it aims to ensure transparency and accountability in these appointments, emphasising the need for skilled personnel in ministerial offices.
# The Free Market Foundation has called on South Africa’s government of national unity to urgently address economic growth constraints. This follows StatsSA’s report of a 0.4-percent gross domestic product rise in the second quarter of 2024. CEO David Ansara emphasises while post-election optimism is positive, it will be short-lived without swift reforms. He urges a shift towards deregulation and reduced government intervention to spur sustainable growth.
# Paralympic Games: South Africa’s Donald Ramphadi and Lucas Sithole have clinched bronze in the Quad Doubles tennis in Paris, defeating Brazil’s Leandro Pena and Ymanitu Silva 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 in a two-hour match. This victory marks the first-ever Paralympic medal in wheelchair tennis for South Africa. This brings Team SA’s medal tally to four, following Pieter du Preez’s earlier cycling bronze medal.
# And, the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-85-cents and the euro at 19-rand-76-cents.
