# An Eastern Cape politician is gunned down in Komani
# The MK Party tables a motion of no confidence in Ramaphosa over the police crisis
# And an elephant tramples a man to death in a private game reserve near Mossel Bay
# The chief whip of the Emalahleni local municipality in the Eastern Cape, Xoliseka Lali, had been shot dead in Komani. Lali was also the authority’s head of Infrastructure Portfolio. His body was discovered in the bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and back. Eastern Cape police have launched an official investigation, and no suspects have been arrested yet. The motive is still unknown.
In Gauteng, police are appealing to the public for information on Hlanganani Aggriper Mncwango, the second suspect linked to the murder of Ekurhuleni chief auditor Mpho Mafole. One suspect is due to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. Mafole was shot last month while driving on the R23. He was investigating a two-billion-rand electricity revenue shortfall. Gauteng police spokesperson, Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, confirmed a warrant has been issued for Mncwango’s arrest and urged him to surrender. The public is encouraged to report any information at police stations.
# The MK Party has tabled a motion of no confidence against president Cyril Ramaphosa for failing to fire Police minister Senzo Mchunu and protect vulnerable citizens. The party has requested a special parliamentary sitting within two weeks to debate and vote on the motion. MK Party chief whip Colleen Makhubele accuses Ramaphosa of ignoring claims of political interference in the South African Police Service, mismanaging the economy, and failing to address high crime levels:
# An employee was trampled to death by an elephant at a private game reserve near Mossel Bay in the Southern Cape. Mossel Bay Advertiser reports local police spokesperson Kappie Kapp as saying the incident happened at the Gondwana Reserve. He says emergency services had been summoned, but the 39-year-old victim was declared dead at the scene. The elephant had been moved from the area. Police have opened an inquest docket while the investigation continues.
# Soccer: The coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Justin Madugu, says their focus is to take the championship from Banyana Banyana, claiming that they are the favourites and not the underdogs. The two sides lock horns this evening in a much anticipated Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final. Known for their historic dominance, Nigeria chases a record tenth title, while Banyana aims for a third straight final. Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says pressure comes with the game:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-60-cents and the euro at 20-rand-60-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-74-cents and Bitcoin trades at 118-thousand-254-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-420-dollars-77-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-89-cents a barrel.
