# Fikile Mbalula accuses the DA of gaslighting on cadre deployment
# Rise Mzansi scrutinises the 200-million-rand in political party funding
# And Netball: The new Proteas coach will be announced next week
# ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula accuses what he calls, the DA-led right-wing forces, of launching an ideological offensive, distorting and caricaturing the ANC’s cadre policy and deployment strategy. Briefing the media on readiness for their manifesto launch rally, Mbalula criticised the DA’s alleged dishonesty, stating it misleads the public by presenting itself as a party without member deployments in public service. Mbalula says the DA’s gaslighting contradicts the essence of multi-party democracy:
# Rise Mzansi alleges the 200-million-rand allocated for political party funding ahead of the general elections will end up in the bank accounts of major political parties. Chief organiser Makashule Gana criticises the allocation. He says smaller parties like Rise Mzansi have to rely on donations while major parties like the ANC and the DA receive the largest share, diverting funds that could address other pressing needs:
# City of Cape Town law enforcement, aided by the sheriff of the court, has evicted 37 homeless people from the Green Point tennis courts. This follows a final eviction order issued by the Western Cape High Court in December for the people to vacate voluntarily by the end of last month. Ward councillor Nicola Jowell says the city then obtained an ejectment order to forcefully remove the occupants. She confirms the occupants were notified on Monday.
# Russia tore up a fishing deal reached with Britain almost seven decades ago after the United Kingdom announced sanctions against six managers in charge of the Arctic prison where opposition leader Alexei Navalny died last week. Soviet leader Nikita Krus-chev signed the agreement in 1956 to allow British boats to fish in the Barents Sea. Moscow says the British had eaten Russian fish for 68 years and must now lose weight and get smarter. Britain says the decision wouldn’t have any material impact on its fish supplies.
# Netball: Netball South Africa is set to announce the new Proteas coach next week Wednesday, following the departure of Norma Plummer. The Australian coached the national team from 2015 to 2019 and again from 2022 to last month. Among the front runners for the position are Jenny van Dyk, Rozanne Matthyse, and Dumisane Chauke. Netball SA’s president, Cecilia Molokwane, says the new coach will be tasked with selecting the national team, emphasising the importance of identifying the best players.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 19-rand-7-cents and the euro at 20-rand-67-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-14-cents and Bitcoin trades at 51-thousand-250-dollars-70-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-and-26-dollars-15-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-72-cents a barrel.
