Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Minister Kubayi calls for justice after an Eastern Cape prosecutor was gunned down
# Questions are asked after a man’s body is found in a Cape Town hospital’s parking lot after three days
# And cricket: The pressure is on Rishabh Pant as his team needs him to live up to his big IPL price tag
# Justice minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has called for the swift arrest of suspects linked to the murder of 30-year-old prosecutor Elona Sombulula in Mtentu in the Eastern Cape. Kubayi says last week’s murder may be linked to complex cases he was handling. She emphasised to SABC News the need to protect prosecutors working under challenging conditions:
# Questions are being asked over security measures at the Durbanville Mediclinic in Cape Town following the discovery of the body of a man in his car – three days after he died. The 49-year-old man visited his mother in hospital and apparently had a heart attack upon returning to his car at the parking lot. Police only found the body after a visitor raised the alarm and the man’s sister reported him missing. Mediclinic confirmed an internal investigation has been launched.
# Senior Hamas official Bassem Naim says that the militant group insisted on a comprehensive agreement to end the war with Israel in Gaza, now in its 19th month. Israel announced plans on Monday to expand its military campaign in the war-ravaged territory, which an Israeli official said would entail its conquest. The plan has triggered international condemnation. An Israeli security source said the troop deployment would allow a window of opportunity for a possible hostage deal coinciding with US president Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East later this month.
# Cricket: Pressure is mounting on record Indian Premier League signing Rishabh Pant, with Lucknow Super Giants badly needing their captain to find his brilliant best with the bat, if they are to have any chance of making the playoffs. The wicketkeeper has flopped since Lucknow splashed 59-million-rand on him at the auction, scoring just 128 runs from 10 innings this season. Despite Pant’s reputation as a swashbuckling left-hander who can destroy opposition bowling, the 27-year-old has only made one score of note, 63 against Chennai Super Kings on 14 April.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-27-cents and the euro at 20-rand-76-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-42-cents and Bitcoin trades at 96-thousand-755-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-384-dollars-11-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 61-dollars-85-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Gautrain is offering a discount on train fares to eligible customers to make transport more affordable. Through the newly launched KlevaMova, passengers will be able to get a 50-percent discount on train trips to people living in households with a combined household annual income of 350-thousand-rand or less. Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, says students under the age of 25, learners, pensioners, and recipients of Sassa’s disability grant can also access the discount:
