# Three bodies, believed to be police members who went missing last week, have been recovered from the Hennops River in Centurion. The officers, en route from the Free State to Polokwane, disappeared on 23 April while travelling in a white VW Polo. According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the bodies are yet to be identified. More searches and investigations continue:
# Algeria says Israel’s ban on the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, is an attack on the present and future of the Palestinian people. Speaking at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Algeria’s Maya Sahli Fadel said the move violates international law and promotes double standards that defy the principles of the UN Charter and global justice:
# The DA has congratulated Prime Minister Mark Carney and Canada’s Liberal Party on their national election victory. The DA says Carney’s win brings renewed hope for liberal democracy amid global uncertainty. This also follows former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation earlier this year. The DA expressed its desire to strengthen diplomatic and trade ties with Canada and pledged support for advancing shared freedoms and economic cooperation as a partner in the government of national unity.
# A 9.3-billion-rand fund aimed at improving maternal and neonatal health in sub-Saharan Africa was launched in Abu Dhabi today at a time when Western countries are sharply cutting aid to Africa. The Beginnings Fund brings together philanthropists including the Gates Foundation. The fund seeks to prevent more than 300-thousand deaths and improve access to quality care for 34-million mothers and babies by that date. Over the next five years, the Beginnings Fund aims to partner with 10 countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
# Cricket: India’s women won the opening match in the tri-series against South Africa by 15 runs. They won the toss in Colombo and elected to bat first. The Indians scored 276 for 6 with Pratika Rawal top-scoring with 78 from 91 balls. The Proteas women got off to a great start with Tazmin Britz and Laura Wolfaardt’s scoring a 140-run opening partnership. Britz scored 109 runs off 107 balls but the wickets kept falling around her and South Africa was all out for 261 in the final over.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-52-cents and the euro at 21-rand-12-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-83-cents and Bitcoin trades at 94-thousand-976-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-313-dollars-97-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-80-cents a barrel.
