Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Beitbridge border post prepares for an increase in repatriation traffic
# An MK Party MP claims Julius Malema blocked Feroz Khan’s appearance before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee
# And soccer: An extreme heat warning is issued for the World Cup host city, Kansas City
# The Border Management Authority says operations at the Beitbridge Border Post remain fluid, with an increase in buses carrying foreign nationals expected later today. Deputy Commissioner for Operations David Chilembe says nearly two-thousand-900 people, mostly Malawian nationals and some Zimbabweans, were processed yesterday. About 280 deportees arrived from the Lindela Repatriation Centre, while others were voluntarily returning home. Chilembe says officials are facilitating both organised repatriations and self-managed departures:
# MK Party Member of Parliament Vusi Shongwe has told the Madlanga Commission that EFF leader Julius Malema opposed efforts to have Major-General Feroz Khan appear before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee. Shongwe claimed some committee members supported summoning Khan, but other parties backed the EFF’s position. He said the disagreement over Khan’s proposed testimony raised concerns and resulted in the senior police officer not being called to testify:
# Build One South Africa will not support the EFF’s motion of no confidence in National Assembly speaker Thoko Didiza. On World Parliament Day, BOSA says Parliament should prioritise strengthening oversight rather than pursuing politically driven motions. The party’s Roger Solomons says Didiza has complied with Constitutional Court requirements and the threshold for removal has not been met. He calls for reforms to strengthen Parliament’s independence and improve accountability in government.
# Relatives are desperately searching for loved ones after a hotel holding more than 100 Venezuelans deported by the US on Wednesday, collapsed during deadly earthquakes that same evening. They were taken to the hotel in a coastal city north of the capital of Caracas, La Guaira. Some of the deportees survived the collapse, but many remain trapped in the rubble while hope is dwindling, days after the initial disaster. At least one-thousand-700 people were killed in the quakes, with many more still missing.
# Soccer: An extreme heat warning was issued for Kansas City where Colombia and Ghana will face off in a World Cup group of 32 match on Friday. The US city is also the training base for several teams. The US weather service warns of dangerously hot conditions of up to 41-degrees Celsius, saying high humidity will increase the discomfort. Extreme weather had already had an impact on the tournament, with the group match between France and Iray being delayed by two hours because of a storm.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-38-cents against the rand and the euro at 18-rand-76-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-65-cents and Bitcoin trades at 58-thousand-431-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-21-dollars-41-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-42-cents a barrel.
