# Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has called for urgent action to tackle Johannesburg’s growing energy crisis and financial issues. In talks with mayor Dada Morero, he highlighted problems like declining municipal revenues, the rising 6.3-billion-rand Eskom debt, and billing disputes between City Power and Eskom. Addressing the media, Ramokgopa said it was crucial to resolve these issues internally before seeking court intervention:
Meanwhile, the president of Giwusa, Mametlwe Sebei, has declared that Eskom’s threat to cut the power in Johannesburg is unlawful. Eskom issued a notice due to the city’s debt. The metro condemned this, alleging overbilling issues and vows to explore legal measures. Sebei says that this could lead to economic strain:
# Business Leadership South Africa has commended Transport minister Barbara Creecy for her clear and ambitious plan to reform the logistics sector. The plan includes increasing rail freight to 250-million tons annually, improving port operations, and boosting passenger and air freight services. The organisation’s CEO, Busisiwe Mavuso, believes Creecy’s work on Transnet, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s rail network, and air freight is vital for economic growth and cutting logistics costs. Mavuso expects these efforts to boost competitiveness, create jobs, and strengthen private-sector collaboration.
# Cricket: Durban’s Super Giants offered some appealing options when ticket sales for next year’s SA20 opened. Fans are offered a discount of 25-percent when buying tickets for all five home games at Kingsmead, paying 412-rand instead of 110-rand per match. There are also many options for the stadium’s suites and hospitality venues. The tournament kicks off on the ninth of January with the match between defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and M-I Cape Town in Gqeberha. The final is on the eighth of February.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-86-cents and the euro at 19-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-1-cent and Bitcoin trades at 82-thousand-294-dollars-30-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-656-dollars-65-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-53-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Internet searches in the United States for moving abroad surged as soon as it became clear Donald Trump would return to the White House. Google’s data reveals US searches for “move to Canada” shot up by one-thousand-270-percent within the 24-hours after the polls closed last week. Sky News reports similar queries about emigrating to Australia surged by 820-percent, while 25-thousand Americans accessed Immigration New Zealand’s website immediately after the election results. This followed Trump’s campaign promise to carry out mass deportations of all illegal immigrants.
