# US voters are urged not to be misled by conspiracy theories
# And tennis: Novak Djokovic withdraws from the ATP Finals
# The Constitutional Court has reserved judgment in DA Abroad’s citizenship court case. The petition is challenging the South African Citizenship Act, which mandates the loss of citizenship for South Africans after acquiring another nationality without permission. The Supreme Court of Appeal had previously ruled in favour, while the Constitutional Court was meant to ratify this. The DA’s Ludré Stevens says they advocate for an automatic citizenship restoration:
# Water and Sanitation minister Pemmy Majodina has reiterated the need for all dam owners to register for licenses following a dam collapse in the Swartland Municipality in the Western Cape. A preliminary report revealed previous owners failed to secure necessary approvals, leading to the dam’s unsafe condition. Providing feedback on 100 days in office, the minister said that liability investigations continue:
# Americans have started casting their votes to elect the country’s leaders and new president. However, former president Donald Trump, who is up against current vice-president Kamala Harris, has already made repeated claims that Democrats are cheating. This means everything from voter eligibility to logistical problems like long lines, ballot functionality and vote counting, will be scrutinised closely, especially in the key battleground states. Election officials have pledged to uphold the integrity of the vote and urged voters not to be misled by conspiracy theories.
# Tennis: Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the ATP Finals, starting in Turin, Italy, on Sunday. The Serbian said on social media he is still nursing an injury. Djokovic’s decision means Casper Ruud of Norway, Australian Alex de Minaur and Russian Andrey Rublev take the remaining three spots in the tournament, featuring the season’s eight best singles players and doubles pairings. They join Jannik Sinner of Italy, German Alexander Zverev, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, Russian Daniil Medvedev and American Taylor Fritz.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-46-cents and the euro at 19-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-67-cents and Bitcoin trades at 68-thousand-846-dollars-90-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-737-dollars-26-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-53-cents a barrel.
# And finally: News24 has introduced SecureDrop, a new tool to bolster protection for whistleblowers sharing sensitive information. This platform enables secure, anonymous exchanges between sources and journalists, leaving no digital trail. Editor-in-chief Adriaan Basson highlights its importance in South Africa’s hostile environment for whistleblowers. He says SecureDrop’s encryption methods will assist News24 in safeguarding those who expose corruption and misconduct. Basson says this new technology reinforces commitments to ethical journalism and source protection.
