# The DA vows to protect Tshwane residents against the new coalition
# NotInMyName International seeks the closure of foreign-owned shops following children’s deaths in Soweto
# And cricket: A brilliant victory for the Proteas women to go to the top of Group B in the T20 World Cup
# The DA says it is committed to safeguarding Tshwane residents as the ANC forms a coalition with the EFF and other parties. This follows the election of ActionSA’s Nasiphi Moya as new mayor. The DA’s former mayor, Cilliers Brink, says this coalition risks the city’s financial stability. He says the DA pledges to uphold progress made on vital projects and ensure accountability from the ANC-EFF coalition:
# NotInMyName International is calling for the closure of foreign-owned spaza shops in townships, arguing that the local economy must return to its rightful owners. This follows the deaths of five children in Soweto who allegedly consumed contaminated food. The civil rights movement’s secretary-general Themba Masango believes empowering residents by removing foreign shop owners will help revitalise the township economy and protect the community’s well-being:
# Zimbabwean black farmers who gained land through seizures more than twenty years ago will have their 99-year leases converted into transferable tenure. Information minister Jenfan Muswere announced that this new tenure document will provide enhanced security for beneficiaries of the land reform programme. This will enable them to sell their property, as previously they were unable to do so. They will also be able to use the land as collateral. Muswere further detailed plans to also attract investments in agriculture and related sectors.
# Cricket: The Proteas women are back to winning ways in the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. They beat Scotland by a mammoth 80 runs in their Group B match in Dubai. Captain Laura Wolvaardt, Tazmin Brits and Marizanne Kapp all scored 40s and the Proteas posted a very competitive 166 for five. They then dismissed Scotland for just 86 after Nonkululeko Mlaba took three wickets. The Proteas are now top of the group and play Bangladesh in their final group match on Saturday.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-65-cents and the euro at 19-rand-33-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-9-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-901-dollars-20-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-613-dollars-91-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-4-cents a barrel
# And finally: Robbie Williams’ Johannesburg show scheduled for 18 January next year has been rescheduled as a result of conflicts linked to the British pop singer’s Better Man movie promotional commitments in the US. Two replacement shows will now take place at SunBet Arena, Time Square, Pretoria, on 25 and 26 January. Ticket holders will be refunded or contacted for alternative arrangements. Pre-sale tickets will be available on 24 October, with general sales starting on 25 October. The Cape Town show remains unaffected.
