# The FF Plus welcomes president Ramaphosa’s three month grace period to discuss the BELA Act
# AZAPO says the two-pot system will do nothing to address the structural nature of unemployment
# And soccer: New coach and new players as Kaizer Chiefs try to break their trophy drought
# The Freedom Front Plus has welcomed president Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to delay the implementation of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act for three months. Party leader Pieter Groenewald cited concerns over language rights and the law’s impact on school admissions and management. He emphasised the plans to use the consultation period to address these issues and protect mother-tongue education rights:
Meanwhile, RISE Mzansi says although the act is not perfect, it is a step in the right direction. The party supports the act’s updates to schooling regulations but has concerns about penalties for not enrolling children in grade R. Rise Mzansi spokesperson Gugu Ndima says the party will monitor the act’s implementation and push for further improvements, prioritising the needs of learners and teachers:
# AZAPO says the two-pot system will do nothing to address the structural nature of the country’s unemployment, low wages and poverty that causes workers to remain in a cycle of debt. Spokesperson, Jabu Rakwena South Africans have seen an assault on the working poor and middle class in terms of rising inflation on key household spending items like food and fuel or transport, against suppressed wages. He says any changes to the retirement system must be linked to a concrete plan for redistribution and growth of the economy.
# An armed attack has claimed the life of a second Ecuador prison director in less than two weeks. Maria Daniela Icaza, the director of the country’s biggest prison, was killed yesterday, nine days after the head of a prison in the Amazonian province of Sucumbios, Alex Guevara, also died in an armed attack while travelling by car. Ecuador’s prisons are among the most dangerous in the world, and many have been taken over by drug gangs.
# Soccer: The Premier League season gets underway tomorrow. The highlight of day one is heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs, who open their campaign at the Free State Stadium against newly-promoted Marumo Gallants. The Amakhosi are desperate to end a near decade-long trophy drought. They have brought in Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi and he has made some new signings, like defender Inacio Miguel. The 28-year-old joined Chiefs from Angolan side Petro de Luanda and hopes for success in the PSL:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-73-cents and the euro at 19-rand-69-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-32-cents and Bitcoin trades at 57-thousand-788-dollars-77-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-576-dollars-39-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-89-cents a barrel.
