# ActionSA plans to write to president Cyril Ramaphosa, demanding action against the Department of Justice for obstructing the National Prosecuting Authority. Reports indicate that the Investigating Directorate has been denied access to crucial state capture evidence due to the department’s negligence. ActionSA’s Athol Trollip calls on Ramaphosa to expedite the implementation of the NPA Amendment Act, and enhance the NPA’s independence and funding:
# Build One South Africa has condemned the South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape for abandoning over 165-thousand criminal dockets since 2018. The party argues this has led to a significant rise in crime, with communities left vulnerable and terrorised. High-profile cases, including recent murders in Motherwell, remain unresolved, leaving many victims without justice. BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane calls for urgent reforms, including increasing police recruitment and funding, improving forensic support, and digitising case records to restore justice and public trust.
# The DA in Gauteng is calling for a swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of four learners in the province. Three siblings from Evaton Primary School in Sebokeng died from suspected food poisoning. A Grade eight learner from Tsakane Secondary School in Ekurhuleni died after allegedly ingesting rat poison. The DA’s Sergio Isa dos Santos says the MEC of Education, Matome Chiloane, has some tough questions to answer about this tragedies:
# Rugby: Aphelele Fassi will start at fullback in his fourth Test for South Africa in Saturday’s Rugby Championship match against Australia in Perth. He replaces the experienced Willie le Roux in one of ten changes coach Rassie Erasmus made to the starting team that won the first Test in Brisbane 33-7. Fassi made his debut for the Springboks in 2021 and scored 10 points in his previous three Tests. He expects a huge effort from the Wallabies at the Optus Stadium:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-4-cents and the euro at 19-rand-89-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-22-cents and Bitcoin trades at 60-thousand-741-dollars-28-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-464-dollars-66-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-11-cents a barrel.
# And, finally: Former British prime minister Liz Truss stormed off stage after a banner featuring a lettuce and the words “I crashed the economy” appeared behind her at an event. She was taking questions from an audience as part of her book tour, when a banner came down from the ceiling. It referred to a lettuce the Daily Star livestreamed, to see if it wilted before her premiership ended. She resigned just 49 days into the job with the newspaper declaring the lettuce victorious.
