# AfriForum has pledged its support for the newly appointed Police minister, Senzo Mchunu, reaffirming its commitment to cooperating closely with the police. This follows Mchunu’s outline of urgent crime-fighting priorities. AfriForum’s Jacques Broodryk vows to address any issues of incompetence, corruption, or political interference within the police:
# Pacific nations have agreed to raise fishing quotas on bluefin tuna catches after a recovery of stocks. Members of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission agreed at talks in Japan to raise the quota for large bluefin tuna by 50-percent. For smaller bluefin tuna weighing less than 30 kilograms the limit was raised ten-percent. The meeting brings together 26 nations and regions to determine fishing policy in the Pacific.
# Rwandan President Paul Kagame has won a fourth term after receiving 99.15-percent of votes. This is according to partial results from an election where only two challengers were allowed to run against him. The outcome of yesterday’s poll was never in doubt, with Kagame ruling the small African nation with an iron fist for three decades. Partial results issued by the Election Commission seven hours after polls closed showed that Kagame had won even more votes than the 98.79-percent he got in the last poll seven years ago.
# Soccer: Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager after his side lost a second Euro final in a row. He said it has been the honour of his life to play for England and to manage the team. Southgate was in charge of the team for almost eight years and a total of 102 games. He says England has the best fans in the world and their support has meant the world to him. He adds he looks forward to watching players create more special memories and to inspire the nation.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-15-cents and the euro at 19-rand-73-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-50-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-701-dollars-77-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-434-dollars-79-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 83-dollars-52-cents a barrel.
# And finally, the United Nations’ General Assembly will mark International Nelson Mandela Day, celebrating its 15th year. The official commemoration on Thursday will honour the late president’s legacy under the theme ‘It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.’ General Assembly president Dennis Francis highlights Mandela’s view of poverty as an injustice, while deputy secretary-general Amina Mohammed urges the council to follow Mandela’s path to end poverty:
