# Correctional Services is criticised for not ensuring inmates have the necessary documentation to vote
# AfriForum slams the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling on the Kill the Boer chant
# And cricket: A former Australian Test batter wants to help Italy qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup
# Prisoners’ rights activist Lerato Manaka criticised the Department of Correctional Services for not ensuring inmates have the necessary documentation to vote tomorrow. Although the department stated it is ready, with 14-thousand-753 inmates registered to vote, Manaka highlighted that only 20-percent of eligible South African inmates possess ID’s. This lack of documentation is set to prevent many from voting. Manaka stresses the importance of inmates’ democratic right to vote and the need for campaign access within correctional centres.
# AfriForum denounced the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling that the “Kill the Boer” chant is not hate speech, saying it endangers farmers and Afrikaners. CEO Kallie Kriel has criticised the ruling, citing it as a biased opinion from acting judge Raylene Keightley. Kriel says if courts won’t protect these groups, they’ll increase self-protection through expanding community safety networks. He says they will consider challenging the ruling in the Constitutional Court:
# Zimbabwe’s former opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, is advocating for dialogue with president Emmerson Mnangagwa to resolve the 2023 electoral dispute. Chamisa, who stepped down as leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change earlier this year, criticised current government structures as illegitimate. He said in Harare he hopes for interventions from the Southern African Development Community and other continental bodies to address the issue:
# The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting in New York today, over an Israeli airstrike targeting Hamas that reportedly killed dozens at a displaced persons camp in Rafah. Israeli officials said shrapnel may have ignited a fuel tank, causing a fire that engulfed tents. Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called it a tragic mistake as the military investigates the civilian deaths. The UN human rights chief, Volker Türk, says the incident shows nowhere is safe in Gaza.
# Cricket: Former Australian Test batter Joe Burns wants to help Italy reach the 2026 T20 World Cup to pay tribute to his late brother, Dominic, who died in February. The 34-year-old played 23 Tests for the Baggy Green between 2014 and 2020. He is eligible to represent Italy through his mother’s heritage. Burns says he often reflects on his grandparents’ bravery when they left Italy to start a new life in Australia. Italy has never qualified for a World Cup in any format.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-29-cents and the euro at 19-rand-90-cents.
