Speaking ahead of the tournament opener between South Africa and the co-host, De Lille told SABC News she seeks to promote increased travel between the countries. She says the global event provides a platform to showcase South Africa’s diverse attractions to international audiences:
# Gauteng Traffic chief inspector Samuel Mashaba has told the Madlanga commission informant Tumelo Nku gave him money as a friend, despite insisting their relationship was neither social nor business-related. Evidence leader Lee Segeels-Ncube questions Mashaba’s message referring to not approaching the “boss” empty-handed. He maintains he did not associate with him:
# The ANC Youth League is leading a protest outside Cartrack’s headquarters in Rosebank, Johannesburg, demanding answers over the death of employee Gcina Dhladhla. Demonstrators allege Dhladhla informed a supervisor she was unwell but was instructed to continue working. The company has since denied the claims. Dhladhla was found dead in a toilet cubicle on Saturday. Protesters accuse Cartrack of misrepresenting the circumstances surrounding her death. The protestors are calling for accountability.
Moving abroad:
# Three Indian sailors have died in a US military operation to halt a tanker off Oman as part of Washington’s efforts to block Iran-linked shipping. The deaths are the first reported since the blockade began on April 13, operations which have seen the US disable eight ships and turn back more than 100 others. Indian Shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed the three deaths. The US military says the crew of an American aircraft had carried out a precision strike on an oil products tanker in the Gulf of Oman.
# Cricket: Veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp says the Proteas Women shouldn’t rely only on in-form captain Laura Wolvaardt in the T20 World Cup in England and Wales, starting tomorrow. She says the rest of the players should also come to the party in order for them to win the tournament after losing three previous World Cup finals. Wolvaardt is in red-hot form, smashing a century and three half-centuries in the recent T20 series victory over India. South Africa starts their World Cup campaign against dangerous Australia on Saturday.
