# Acting national police commissioner Puleng Dimpane welcomes the swift response by Gauteng provincial teams following the mass shootings in Cleveland, Johannesburg, that left 12 people dead. # Witness “I” has revealed at the Madlanga commission he stayed at a property owned by controversial businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala for nearly two-years following attempts on his life during a 2023 attack at his Mamelodi home. He was advised by police Captain Faleni Zungu to relocate for safety reasons, and only later learned the property belonged to Matlala. He says he had no direct contact with him:
Meanwhile, Tax Justice SA founder Yusuf Abramjee says he will not be intimidated after alleged threats against him were revealed before the commission. The documents reportedly include WhatsApp messages linked to suspended deputy head of Crime Intelligence, Feroz Khan, and tobacco kingpin Mohamed Sayed, following Abramjee’s allegations of illicit cigarette trade. He says this highlights the scale of organised crime linked to illegal tobacco sales, and vows to continue exposing corruption:
# The National Tertiary Education Union in the Eastern Cape has lodged a criminal complaint against suspended University of Fort Hare vice-chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu, alleging serious governance failures and accountability. The complaint has been lodged with the Special Investigating Unit, the Hawks and the Public Protector. Buhlungu was suspended after a forensic report alleged he and four employees had appointed two executive directors without the approval of the university’s council. The union says Buhlungu has brought the institution into disrepute.
# Rugby: England captain Maro Itoje has not been included in the squad for a training camp in preparation for the non-cap fixture against a French 15 next Friday. This is ahead of the inaugural Nations Championship, where England will face South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina. Coach Steve Borthwick revealed last month discussions were had on resting Itoje following his considerable game time with club, country and the British and Irish Lions over the past two seasons. Four uncapped players were included in the training squad.
