In this bulletin:
# Fadiel Adams is arrested after failing to report to police
# South Africa strengthens the fight against foot-and-mouth disease with global partnerships
# And two people killed and many injured when a car ploughed into a crowd in the German city of Leipzig
# Police have arrested the leader of the National Coloured Congress and Member of Parliament, Fadiel Adams, at his parliamentary village home in Cape Town after failing to hand himself over. He was sought on fraud and defeating the ends of justice charges linked to the murder case of ANC-councillor Sindiso Magaqa. Adams claims he had indicated willingness to cooperate, speaking on his way to Grassy Park police station:
# Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, says South Africa has significantly expanded its foot-and-mouth disease vaccination programme, securing millions of doses from Argentina and Turkey while boosting local production. Speaking at Parliament, he says more than 2.5-million animals have already been vaccinated nationwide. Steenhuisen says the department aims to reach 80-percent of the national herd by year-end through a risk-based rollout supported by provincial teams and private partners:
Steenhuisen also lifted foot-and-mouth disease restrictions within the KwaZulu-Natal disease management area, ending movement controls introduced in 2021. He says the decision follows changing outbreak patterns, with infections now spread across the province. Steenhuisen says while restrictions are removed, authorities stress that broader biosecurity measures will remain in place as South Africa shifts toward a single national framework for managing livestock disease control:
Moving abroad:
# Two people are dead and several others were injured when a car ploughed into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig. Mayor Burkhard Jung says the suspected perpetrator – who authorities identified as a 33-year-old German citizen – was arrested. He adds authorities are not yet clear about a motive. Police confirmed a car had struck several people in the central area before driving off. Authorities say 22 people were injured, including three seriously.
# Rugby: Springbok lock Salmaan Moerat has returned to training and looks set to be fit for the Stormers’ final two United Rugby Championship group matches in Europe. He last played for the Cape Town team in January when he suffered a toe injury. The Stormers, currently top of the log, play Ulster in Ireland on Friday night and Cardiff in Wales next weekend. Moerat’s return is also good news for the national set-up. He leaves the Stormers at the end of the season to join La Rochelle in France.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-65-cents against the rand and the euro at 19-rand-48-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-56-cents and Bitcoin trades at 81-thousand-126-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-555-dollars-34-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 110-dollars-20-cents a barrel.
