# Two apartheid cops are convicted for the murder of a student activist in 1987
# Motorists brace for another fuel price blow
# And DStv could lose 12 Warner Brothers Discovery channels from next month
# The High Court in Johannesburg has found former apartheid-era police members Pieter Stander and Abram Engelbrecht guilty of the 1987 murder of student activist Caiphus Nyoka in Daveyton, Gauteng. Co-accused Leon van den Berg was acquitted after the prosecution failed to prove he acted in furtherance of a common purpose. Judge Mohomed Ismail ruled Engelbrecht ordered the killing while Stander carried it out with Johan Marais, who received a 15-year sentence after pleading guilty to murder. The policemen claimed they had shot Nyoka in self-defence.
# Security strategist Andy Mashaile has criticised former Ekurhuleni city manager Imogen Mashazi’s testimony before the Madlanga commission, calling her conduct reckless and incompetent. Speaking to SABC News, Mashaile alleged she failed ethically and legally. He says Mashazi’s inability to provide evidence or recall key details weakens her claims and exposes deeper concerns about leadership, accountability and alleged rot within Ekurhuleni and the Metro Police Department:
# Motorists face another surge at the pumps as fuel prices are set to rise from tomorrow. The prices of 93 and 95-octane petrol will increase by 29-cents per litre at midnight, diesel will go up by 82-cents and illuminating paraffin by 74-cents, while LP Gas prices will rise by up to 24-cents per kilogram. Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources spokesperson Robert Maake says the increases are driven by international petroleum prices and the rand–US dollar exchange rate:
# DStv subscribers could lose up to 12 Warner Brothers Discovery channels from next month. These include CNN International, Cartoon Network, TLC, and the Food Network. MultiChoice says its agreement with Warner Brothers Discovery will expire at the end of this month, and no new deal has been reached. According to News24, all six DStv packages, from EasyView to Premium, could be affected. MultiChoice will offer alternative content as parent company Canal-plus Africa reports a loss of 1.2-million subscribers over the past year.
# Rugby: Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has urged residents to make the Cape Town Sevens tournament a weekend to remember. The 16 top teams, including defending champions South Africa, Fiji, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand, will compete at the Cape Town Stadium. Hill-Lewis praised the event for its world-class rugby, vibrant atmosphere and family-friendly fun as well as the anticipated economic growth through international and local tourism. Fans are encouraged to dress in their best sevens outfits and join the celebration.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-10-cents and the euro at 19-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-59-cents and Bitcoin trades at 87-thousand-428-dollars.
