Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Angelo Agrizzi avoids jailtime in BOSASA corruption case
# “Please Call Me” inventor Kenneth Makate is likely to receive several hundred million rand from Vodacom
# And soccer: Cristiano Ronaldo plans to retire soon
# Former Bosasa chief operating official Angelo Agrizzi has been sentenced to ten-years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, following a plea deal with the state due to his poor health. He faced charges in the High Court in Pretoria in a 1.8-billion-rand corruption and money laundering case for paying bribes to government officials in exchange for lucrative contracts. Under the agreement, Agrizzi must fully cooperate with investigations and testify in Bosasa-related cases. Judge Papi Mosopa warned that failure to comply will result in immediate imprisonment.
# The GOOD Party says the number of people killed in shooting incidents in Cape Town has spiralled since the launch of the Safer Festive Season operations last month. There have been about 40 deaths, mostly gang-related, reported over the past two weekends. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says the principle of the Safer Festive Season programme cannot be faulted, but a large part of the problem is the politicisation of crime:
# Vodacom potentially paid Kenneth Nkosana Makate between 353-million-rand and 748-million-rand in a settlement for his “Please Call Me” idea. The estimated range is based on the impact that the settlement had on Vodacom’s expected earnings for its interim financial year ending 30 September. The mobile network announced yesterday the matter was brought to a close in an out-of-court settlement after 17 years of legal battles. Vodacom also stated the confidential settlement was accounted for in the group’s interim results, which are due to be released on Monday.
# Soccer: Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo is considering to retire soon. The 40-year-old Al Nassr striker is the all-time leading goalscorer with 952 goals for club and country combined. He said last month he is targeting one-thousand goals before quitting the game. When asked when he will be hanging up his boots, Ronaldo just said “soon”. He admits it will be difficult to bring his glittering career to an end, but says he had been planning for his life post soccer for some time.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-36 and the euro at 20-rand. One British pound costs 22-rand-71-cents and Bitcoin trades at 102-thousand-855-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-seven-dollars-78-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-83-cents a barrel.
# And finally: President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on female leaders worldwide to share knowledge that uplifts vulnerable communities. He was speaking at the International Women’s Forum Cornerstone Conference in Cape Town. Ramaphosa says knowledge multiplies when shared, empowering others to lead and speak up. He emphasised when women lead together, they transform institutions and rebuild communities from within, driving lasting global change. Ramaphosa also called for action against the scourge of gender-based violence:
