# Former MK Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu has announced a national consultation process on forming a new political movement. He was recently removed from his senior position following a controversial visit to Shepherd Bushiri’s church in Malawi. Speaking at a media briefing, Shivambu said the goal is to build a democratic and honest party that offers a real alternative to existing political parties, but he is not leaving MK:
# AfriForum has welcomed the UK government’s decision to deny EFF leader Julius Malema a visa, citing his extremist rhetoric and support for groups like Hamas. The UK referenced Malema’s 2022 Equality Court testimony during AfriForum’s case on the Kill the Boer chant. AfriForum’s Ernst van Zyl says the decision aligns with global efforts to hold extremist politicians accountable. He emphasised that Malema has no right to appeal or review the decision:
# Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance, Xolani Williams, has described the recent floods as catastrophic and unimaginable. So far, 92 people have been confirmed dead, with around 4-thousand displaced. Numbers are expected to rise as search and recovery efforts continue. Speaking at a memorial in Mthatha, Williams said grieving families are still awaiting missing loved ones. He urged all South Africans to observe the national day of mourning:
# Iran says the main target of a missile attack in which a hospital in southern Israel was hit was a military and intelligence base, not the health facility. The hospital and two towns near Tel Aviv were struck during a barrage of Iranian missiles, with Israeli rescuers reporting at least 47 people injured in Iran’s latest attacks. Iran says the hospital was exposed only to the blast wave, and the direct and precise target was the military facility.
# Basketball: The Buss family, which has owned Los Angeles Lakers since 1979, has agreed to sell its majority ownership of the franchises for a record 180-billion-rand. This is the largest sale of a professional sports franchise in the world. The family has made a deal with TWG Global’s founder and CEO, Mark Walter, who owns Los Angeles Dodgers. According to reports, the Buss family will keep a minority share of just over 15-percent, while Jeanie Buss will stay on as Lakers’ governor.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-1-cent and the euro at 20-rand-76-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-30-cents and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-862-dollars.
