Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# A top crime intelligence cop is arrested over a sex worker burglary scandal
# Trump says Iran must make a deal before it is too late
# And cricket: The Proteas need 282 runs to be the World Test champions
# The chief financial official of the police’s Crime Intelligence Division, Philani Lushaba, has been arrested following a scandal involving a sex worker who allegedly stole his state firearm and laptop in 2022. Two other senior crime intelligence officers were arrested for allegedly assisting in covering the burglary. Lushaba, who surrendered in Pretoria today, also faces an investigation in a separate 81-million-rand property scandal linked to irregular spending on properties. It was previously reported he vanished as the National Prosecuting Authority prepared to question him.
# The DA says some businesses in the Johannesburg CBD are spending over ten-thousand-rand a day on diesel to run generators during ongoing power cuts. During an oversight visit, the party found that some businesses have been without power for nearly two weeks, impacting operations and risking job losses. The DA’s Tyrell Meyers blames City Power’s failure to address infrastructure problems and cable theft:
# AfriForum has filed a Promotion of Access to Information Act application to Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi and the provincial Roads Department, seeking answers on the costs, timing, and purpose of Gauteng’s new number plates. AfriForum’s Louis Boshoff warns the initiative could become an expensive burden with minimal benefit. He questions the urgency, citing bigger infrastructure failures:
# US president Donald Trump urged Iran to make a deal, warning there will be more death and destruction after Israel launched deadly strikes targeting its nuclear facilities. He wrote on his Truth Social platform there is still time to end the slaughter, but warns the next already planned attacks will be even more brutal. Trump says Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left and before it is too late.
# Cricket: South Africa needs 282 runs to be crowned World Test champions. The Proteas struggled to dismiss Australia in their second innings at Lord’s in London today. A 59-run partnership between Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc for the tenth wicket frustrated the South African bowlers on the third day of the match. Starc scored his 11th Test-50 to take Australia to 207 all out. It was eventually the part-time bowler Aidan Markram who got rid of Hazlewood to end a tough morning session for Temba Bavuma’s team.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-1-cent and the euro at 20-rand-74-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-37-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-157-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-426-dollars-65-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 73-dollars-64-cents a barrel.
