# South Africa has told the International Court of Justice that the humanitarian collapse in Gaza is not a consequence of conflict, but a deliberate strategy by Israel to destroy the Palestinian people. This comes as the court hears arguments over Israel’s conduct. On the second day of hearings in The Hague, speaking via an interpreter, president Cyril Ramaphosa’s legal adviser, Nokukhanya Jele, told the court, Israel is violating its duties through collective punishment:
# Transport minister Barbara Creecy says South Africa recorded the lowest Easter road crash fatalities in three years. Crashes dropped by 32.5-percent and fatalities fell by 45.6-percent compared to 2024. Creecy credits early planning, visible traffic patrols, and partnerships with civil society and government. Over 177-thousand vehicles were checked and 941 drunk drivers arrested. She confirmed crashes decreased in most provinces except Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape:
# Soccer: Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger is set to miss up to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a knee injury. The Germany centre-back was sent off during his team’s Copa del Rey final defeat by Barcelona on Saturday for throwing an object at the referee. Rudiger is expected to be banned for between four and 12 matches for his outburst in Seville. The 32-year-old may still be able to participate in Real Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign this summer in the United States, with the tournament beginning 14 June.

# And finally, the International Coral Reef Society says the best way to protect coral reefs is to address the root cause of climate change. According to the International Coral Reef Initiative, harmful bleaching of the world’s coral has grown to include 84-percent of the ocean’s reefs. Approximately 25-percent of all marine species can be found in, on and around coral reefs. International Coral Reef Society’s Mark Eakin says that to protect coral reefs, it is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that warm the planet, such as carbon dioxide and methane.
