# The Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s Tactical Response officers have arrested former president Nelson Mandela’s grandchild after they recovered a hijacked vehicle and an unlicensed firearm at a Houghton property once owned by Nelson Mandela. Four more suspects were also arrested. The department’s spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the hijacking victim was found safe and unharmed:
# The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa has called on the South African Council of Educators to take action against schools employing unqualified teachers. Naptosa’s Basil Manuel criticised the practice, saying it undermines education quality. Manuel urged SACE to inspect independent schools and enforce laws against hiring student teachers without supervision. He emphasised that parents deserve assurance of teachers’ qualifications:
Meanwhile, AfriForum welcomes a ruling by the High Court in Pretoria allowing the publication of the class of 2024 matric results next week. The Information Regulator’s urgent application to block the release was dismissed, and the court ordered the regulator to pay AfriForum’s legal costs. AfriForum’s Alana Bailey says the decision is a victory for matriculants and is part of a broader discussion on balancing privacy with public interest:
# Russia says it had expelled more than 80-thousand migrants in 2024, nearly twice as many as in 2023, as the country toughens migration policies after last year’s Crocus City Hall terror attack. More than 140 people were killed in the attack on the conference centre in March, which was allegedly carried out by Tajik nationals and claimed by the Islamic State group. The report did not specify the nationalities of those expelled but most migrants in Russia are labourers from the former Soviet republics of Central Asia.
# Soccer: Seventh placed Kaizer Chiefs face fifth placed Stellenbosch FC in the Premier Soccer League tonight at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg and the fans want to see progress under Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi. Chiefs have managed five victories, three draws and five defeats in all competitions with Nabi in charge. Kick-off is at 7:30. In other matches tonight with the same kick-off time second placed Orlando Pirates are away to Cape Town City and AmaZulu face Sekhukhune United.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-90-cents and the euro at 19-rand-45-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-34-cents and Bitcoin trades at 95-thousand-161-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-648-dollars-37-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 77-dollars-2-cents a barrel.
