# A man from Klawer in the Western Cape had been found guilty of the gruesome killing of local teenager Jerobejin van Wyk in February 2022. The High Court in Cape Town accepted 58-year-old Daniel Smit’s guilty plea on five charges against him – murder, premeditated murder, kidnapping, violating a corpse and defeating the ends of justice. He killed the 13-year-old after accusing him of stealing his fruit, and dumped his body parts in drains on his property. Smit will be sentenced at a later stage.
# ActionSA is calling on government to resist all attempts by foreign powers to dictate its foreign policy. ActionSA’s Solly Moeng says the party believes that government must refrain from capitulating to any foreign power, specifically China in this instance, regarding how to treat its diplomatic guests, namely the Taiwanese. He says while the party acknowledge the presence of many conflicting interests, the foreign policy and global positioning cannot be dictated by any foreign power wielding undue influence over South Africans:
# The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union says the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act must be implemented in its entirety with immediate effect. President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the act into law last month, but delayed the implementation date for clauses four and five, which consider language and admission policies, by three months to allow for further deliberations. Sadtu’s spokesperson, Nomusa Cembi, says transformation in the education sector is non-negotiable:
# French actor Gerard Depardieu is set to go on trial in Paris today on charges of sexually assaulting two women. However, the 75-year-old film star will not attend court due to health reasons. Depardieu, who has appeared in more than 200 films, is considered an icon of French cinema. He is alleged to have assaulted both women during the making of the film Les Volets Verts/The Green Shutters in 2021. The trial is seen as a huge moment for the growing MeToo movement in France.
# Olympic Games: The debate over the main stadium of the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia, is expected to be reignited after David Crisafulli was sworn in as new premier of Queensland this morning. His Liberal National Party won the weekend’s election. Crisafulli’s predecessor, Steven Miles, suggested the Lang Park rugby stadium be used for the opening ceremony to prevent unnecessary costs. Crisafulli is also against the building of a new stadium and is reportedly looking at the refurbishment of the Gabba cricket grounds.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-72-cents and the euro at 19-rand-18-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-3-cents and Bitcoin trades at 68-thousand-565-dollars-60-cents.
