# The MK Party has accused president Cyril Ramaphosa of abusing his power to influence the election outcome. They have filed court papers against him, claiming he used his position during a national address on Sunday to sway voters unfairly. This follows a similar action by the DA, which also filed a complaint against Ramaphosa for violating the Electoral Code of Conduct. Both parties claim Ramaphosa’s address was a misuse of his office for electioneering purposes, providing the ANC with an unfair advantage.
Meanwhile, ANC Treasurer General Gwen Ramokgopa has called on South Africans to seize the opportunity to go out in their numbers to cast votes. She remains confident that her party will do well in the general election. Ramakgopa hopes South Africans will renew their faith in the ruling party. She says each citizen has a critical role to play in the polls:
# AfriForum denounced the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling that the “Kill the Boer” chant is not hate speech, saying it endangers farmers and Afrikaners. CEO Kallie Kriel has criticised the ruling, citing it as a biased opinion from acting judge Raylene Keightley. Kriel says if courts won’t protect these groups, they’ll increase self-protection through expanding community safety networks. He says they will consider challenging the ruling in the Constitutional Court:
# The Cape Town Labour Court has ruled Eskom’s practice of not shortlisting non-designated groups like white men for job posts violates affirmative action law. The case involved employee AP Erasmus who was denied a manager role in 2017, despite top scores. The court found Eskom’s barrier against certain racial groups was unlawful. Judge Hilary Rabkin-Naicker ordered Eskom to cease the practice and pay Erasmus 18 months’ salary, saying their explanation lacked nuance on properly implementing employment equity.
# Rugby: The Junior Springboks will look to improve on their bronze medal from last year when the World Rugby Under20 Championship returns to South Africa next month. The Baby Boks are in Pool C with England, Argentina and Fiji. Pool A consists of last year’s champions, France, and Wales, New Zealand and Spain. Ireland, Australia, Georgia and Italy are in Pool B. The tournament will be played at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch, the Athlone Stadium and the Cape Town Stadium.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-32-cents and the euro at 19-rand-94-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-351-dollars-57-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 83-dollars-16-cents a barrel.
