In this bulletin:
# ActionSA labels the government of national unity a failure after two years in power
# An association says the fuel imbizo tackles energy transition and supply security
# And roadrunning: The mayor lauds Cape Town Marathon’s recognition amongst the elite world marathon series
# ActionSA says the government of national unity has failed to deliver on its promises since it was formed two-years ago. The party claims the government has performed poorly on leadership, economic growth, service delivery, accountability, and crime. ActionSA’s Athol Trollip told the media the GNU has failed in ethical leadership and public service, and its performance on crime and safety is even worse:
# Gauteng Traffic chief inspector Samuel Mashaba has come under scrutiny at the Madlanga commission over his handling of a truck carrying 715-kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated 300-million-rand. The drugs were concealed in a shipping container and tracked from Durban to Johannesburg in July 2021. Evidence leader Lee Segeels-Ncube questioned why the vehicle was not stopped at the Heidelberg weighbridge despite information allegedly being available to Mashaba beforehand:
# The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa says its inaugural Fuels Industry Imbizo comes at a critical time for the sector. Executive director Avhapfani Tshifularo says discussions focused on industry readiness for the Clean Fuels Programme set for implementation next year, future fuel demand, new energy vehicles and the role of biofuels in the energy transition. He welcomes discussions on fuel pricing and liquefied petroleum gas as a clean cooking solution:
# The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry says its Business Confidence Index recovered marginally in May, rising by 0.5 index points to 124.1 after a sharp decline in April. Despite recent volatility, business confidence remains significantly higher than a year ago. SACCI says improved vehicle sales and export volumes boosted sentiment, while declining tourist numbers and higher inflation weighed on confidence. The chamber says rising oil prices and regional conflict continue to pose risks, although a stable rand has helped ease inflationary pressures.
# Roadrunning: Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed the historic achievement of the Cape Town Marathon being confirmed as the eighth World Marathon Major. The race becomes the first event on African soil to join the prestigious series, alongside marathons in Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York. The Cape Town Marathon will officially enter the series on 23 May next year. Hill-Lewis praised the thousands of runners, organisers and supporters whose efforts helped secure the milestone for Cape Town and South Africa.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-51-cents and the euro at 19-rand-5-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-7-cents and Bitcoin trades at 63-thousand-62-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-88-dollars-45-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 91-dollars-36-cents a barrel.
