# Soccer: A players’ union warns about extreme heat at next year’s World Cup
# And the FAK honours Leon Schuster for his lifetime contribution to Afrikaans music, films and radio
# Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo says WhatsApp messages reveal businessman Brown Mogotsi pressed tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala for funds to cover ANC membership in two regions. The exchanges, presented at the Madlanga commission in Pretoria, show Mogotsi warning Matlala that failing to provide the money could result in lost voters. According to Khumalo, the messages suggest financial contributions were being used to influence political outcomes, while Matlala’s business and alleged cartel links were under investigation:
# ActionSA in Gauteng is demanding that the Patriotic Alliance release the full findings of an investigation into its deputy president, Kenny Kunene. Kunene resigned as Johannesburg’s mayoral committee member for Transport in July after being found at the home of murder accused Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe during a police raid. Kunene was later cleared of wrongdoing by an external law firm. ActionSA’s Johannesburg regional secretary Lebo Mokoka has questioned the credibility of the probe, calling for transparency and leaders untainted by criminal associations.
# The Progressive Forces of South Africa have urged acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia and Gauteng commissioner Tommy Mthombeni to investigate the death of former Zambian president Edgar Lungu on South African soil. National Strategic Organiser Bonang Letsokoane cites family and political concerns over possible poisoning. She warns that a delay or inaction could compromise the integrity of South Africa’s justice system, stressing the country’s legal duty to probe suspicious deaths:
# Soccer: Global players’ union FIFPro sounded the alarm over the dangers of playing in extreme heat at next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. In the wake of the Club World Cup, which ran through June and July in the US this year, FIFPro’s Alexander Bielefeld called the tournament a wake-up call in the context of a warming planet. Many of the matches took place in the middle of the afternoon when temperatures often soared well past 30 degrees Celsius.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-28-cents and the euro at 20-rand-29-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-21-cents and Bitcoin trades at 112-thousand-859-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-808-dollars-81-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-44-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Three decades after “Hie’ kommie Bokke!” resounded during the Springboks’ historic Rugby World Cup victory over the All Blacks at Ellis Park in 1995, the Federation of Afrikaans Cultural Associations presented Leon Schuster with an honorary award for his lifetime contribution to Afrikaans music, films and radio. Schuster is currently experiencing health challenges, therefore the FAK visited him at his home in Johannesburg and presented the award to him in person. The FAK expressed its appreciation of Schuster’s continued work to promote the Afrikaans language and culture in an accessible and joyful manner.
