# The death toll has risen to five after a taxi crashed into a crèche in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, this morning. More than ten children were injured. The driver of the taxi, carrying learners from several local schools, lost control on a bend before colliding with a tree and rolling onto the school. The provincial Department of Education’s spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi, says psycho-social support has been arranged for families, schools, and the community:
# The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has re-arrested policeman Mandla Buthelezi, accused of murdering his girlfriend, Gauteng Crime Warden Chesnay Keppler, last December. IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping says Buthelezi was taken into custody at the High Court in Johannesburg today for alleged intimidation. She confirmed he will remain detained at Moroka Police Station until his next court appearance:
# Government has called for calm following protests in Westbury and Coronationville in Johannesburg over ongoing water supply challenges. It says Johannesburg Water is working on immediate relief measures while also finalising the new Brixton reservoir and tower, expected to be completed by the end of next month. Government spokesperson William Baloyi has urged residents to protest peacefully:
Moving abroad:
# American president Donald Trump has blamed the radical left after his ally, Charlie Kirk, was shot in what he called a heinous assassination. Trump says in a video shared online from the Oval Office, Kirk was a patriot who devoted his life to the cause of open debate. He blamed the radical left who he says for years have compared Americans like Kirk to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers. Police have not detained a suspect yet and the motive for the shooting is unknown.
# Soccer: Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush will miss Sunday’s Manchester derby after the Manchester City player suffered a knee ligament injury while on international duty. Marmoush was substituted in the fourth minute of Egypt’s goalless draw with Burkina Faso in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. City hosts Manchester United on Sunday with both sides needing a victory after unconvincing starts to the new Premier League season.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-53-cents and the euro at 20-rand-48-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-69-cents and Bitcoin trades at 113-thousand-960-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-619-dollars-15-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-63-cents a barrel.
