# President Cyril Ramaphosa says nearly two-million young people have so far benefited from the presidential youth employment initiative, aimed at tackling youth unemployment. He made the comments during a visit to Sefako Makgatho Primary School in Saulsville in Tshwane, where he met some of the young beneficiaries. Ramaphosa says the initiative is helping to shape tomorrow’s leaders, with over 255-thousand youth currently working in schools and other sectors:
Experts, educators, and policymakers have meanwhile renewed calls for entrepreneurship to be urgently introduced in South African schools. The various stakeholders gathered in Kempton Park, Gauteng, were they discussed the importance of skills-based education. The initiative has begun in some schools, with international support backing government’s approach. Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube notes that only six in 100 learners graduate from university, highlighting the need for alternative pathways:
# Austrian police say at least eight people died when a shooter opened fire in a school in Graz in the southeastern part of the country. The suspected attacker also died. Public broadcaster ORF reports the school was evacuated afterwards. Several people were seriously injured, including learners and teachers. # Stocks rose today as the latest round of China-US trade talks moved into a second day, with one of US president Donald Trump’s top advisers saying he expected a big, strong handshake. The meeting in London will look to smooth relations after Trump accused Beijing of violating an agreement reached at a top-level meeting in Geneva last month.
# Swimming: Canada’s teenage Olympic champion Summer McIntosh continued her dominance in the pool when she broke the 10-year-old world record in the 200-metre individual medley during the national trials. The 18-year-old clocked two-minutes-5.7-zero-seconds to better the previous record set by Katinka Hosszu of Hungary during 2015’s World Championships. McIntosh, who won three gold medals at the Paris Games last year, on Saturday also set a world record in the 400-metre freestyle.
