# ActionSA tables constitutional amendments to tackle illegal immigration
# BOSA demands urgent sex offender screening of all police officers
# And Cricket: Heinrich Klaasen retires from all forms of international cricket
# ActionSA says the Constitution must be amended to stop the misuse of public services by illegal immigrants. The party has submitted proposed changes to limit access to housing, healthcare, and education to citizens and legal residents only. It also wants the phrase ‘South Africa belongs to all who live in it’ revised, arguing it’s been misinterpreted. ActionSA’s Athol Trollip states that these changes are needed to protect limited state resources and prioritise the needs of South Africans.
# Build One South Africa urges Police minister Senzo Mchunu to urgently screen all officers against the sex offenders register within the next three months. The call comes after it was revealed that less than 0.14-percent of police personnel have undergone this check. They are also demanding a full audit of past and current personnel to identify potential offenders. BOSA’s Roger Solomons says trust in the police is impossible without proper vetting, especially amid the sexual violence crisis:
# Deputy minister in the Presidency, Nonceba Mhlauli says government’s youth employment programme is making steady progress. Speaking at a media briefing, she revealed that over 76-thousand earning opportunities were created between January and March this year, bringing the total to more than 1.67-million since the programme began. According to Mhlauli, more than 4.7-million young people are now registered on the network:
# Russian and Ukrainian officials will meet today in Istanbul to exchange their plans on how to end the three-year war, Europe’s largest conflict since World War Two. This follows after Kyiv said it carried out one of its most successful attacks, hitting bombers parked at airbases deep inside Russia. Urged on by US president Donald Trump, Moscow and Kyiv have opened direct negotiations for the first time since the early weeks of Russia’s invasion, but have yet to make significant progress towards an elusive agreement.
# Cricket: Proteas batter Heinrich Klaasen has retired from all forms of international cricket. This is a blow for the country ahead of co-hosting the 2027 World Cup where he would have been a major draw card. Thirty-three-year-old Klaasen is one of the world’s most destructive batters in white-ball cricket. He is likely to maintain a presence on the global T20 circuit. He says he looks forward to spending more time with his family as this decision will allow him to do so.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-92-cents and the euro at 20-rand-47-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-26-cents and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-275-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-352-dollars-24-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-90-cents a barrel.
