# The Police minister reports a 5.1-percent drop in serious crimes in the second quarter
# The EFF is concerned about serious allegations of sexual offences committed by deployed SANDF troops
# And soccer: Pep Guardiola is confident Manchester City can turn the season around
# Police minister Senzo Mchunu has announced a 5.1-percent decrease in serious crimes reported from July to September. He calls for specialised focus on gender-based violence and femicide, and stronger action against organised and economic crimes, including extortion and attacks on critical infrastructure. Mchunu notes that rapes decreased by 3.1-percent, while robbery at residential premises and non-residential premises decreased by 1.3- and 21.1-percent, respectively:
# The EFF says it is deeply offended, and utterly dismayed, by the findings of a report by the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight on sexual offences committed by military and peace keeping missions. South Africa has more than two-thousand troops stationed in the Democratic Republic of Kongo, Sudan and South Sudan. The party says the findings put South Africa at the top of the list of offending nations, with nine official allegations, and many more very serious unofficial allegations, despite not even being the biggest contributor of troops to these UN missions.
# G7 foreign ministers are meeting near Rome for two days of talks with regional counterparts on the Middle East, before turning to Russia and the war in Ukraine. The Group of Seven ministers will also discuss the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas’s military chief, Mohammed Deif, and the possible effects on the current crises in Lebanon and Gaza. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will attend the talks alongside ministers from fellow G7 nations Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, and host Italy.
# Soccer: Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says he has full confidence in his players to get their season back on track. The defending Premier League champions suffered a four-nil loss at home to Tottenham on Saturday, their fifth successive defeat this season. This was City’s heaviest home defeat since 2003, and the first time they have lost five games in a row since 2006. Guardiola says he knows his players are hurting, but they now need to stick together like never before:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-5-cents and the euro at 18-rand-93-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-71-cents and Bitcoin trades at 98-thousand-385-dollars. Gold sells at two-thousand-684-dollars-55-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 74-dollars-31-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Astronomers have spotted a newborn planet, that took only three-million years to form, orbiting around a young star. In cosmic terms this is quite swift and a discovery that challenges the current understanding of the speed of planetary formation. Scientists say the discovery confirms that planets can be formed within three-million years, which was previously not certain, since Earth took 10-to 20-million years to form. The new planet is estimated to be 10 to 20 times the mass of Earth, and one of the youngest planets ever discovered beyond the solar system.
