# Acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia warns against the abuse of power
# Ramaphosa clarifies the dual Police ministers
# And cricket: England bowls India out for just 224 on the second morning at the Oval
# Newly appointed acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia says the abuse of policing power is a growing concern. Speaking outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Cachalia stressed that police must act within the law when confronting violent criminals. Cachalia cited incidents like Marikana and Andries Tatane, warning against lawlessness. He promised full support for members while prioritizing effective, accountable, and well-run policing to ensure better outcomes:
Meanwhile, president Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed concerns over the situation of two ministers of Police following Cachalia’s swearing-in as acting minister. He steps in while Senzo Mchunu is on special leave, preparing to appear before the Madlanga commission. Ramaphosa says the technicality will be resolved soon, as continued leadership in law enforcement is vital for national safety. He expects a full report within three months:
# Union federation Saftu is calling for a national employment strategy that ties monetary policy to a broader industrialisation plan, ensuring job creation through state-led investment and local industry support. This follows the Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee’s decision to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to seven-percent. Saftu’s spokesperson, Asive Dyani, says they see the decision as nothing but a policy position intended to prioritise the interests of financial capital over those of the working class:
# The DA has expressed concern about Aviation Co-ordination Services’ allegations regarding obstruction by the Airports Company South Africa. ACS claims the grenade incident at OR Tambo International Airport in May could have been prevented if ACSA hadn’t blocked efforts to replace outdated baggage screening equipment. A deactivated training grenade were mistakenly cleared during screening. The DA says Transport minister Barbara Creecy must take steps against any unlawful conduct by ACSA executives and appear before Parliament to account for governance failures and risks to passenger safety.
# Cricket: Gus Atkinson was the pick of the English bowlers in India’s first innings of the final Test at the Oval in London. He took five wickets to help skittle the visitors out for just 224. Josh Tongue claimed three scalps. India resumed on 204 for six on the second morning, and the remaining four wickets fell within half an hour. Karun Nair top-sored with 57. England is leading the five-match series 2-1.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-29-cents and the euro at 20-rand-88-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-1-cent and Bitcoin trades at 114-thousand-840-dollars.
