# An analyst warns the SA-US tensions may impact key trade talks
# A second suspect is arrested for the double murder at a Gauteng primary school
# And cricket: Altogether 19 wickets fall on the first day of the Ashes
# Trade relations between South Africa and the US could be severely affected as the handing over of the G20 presidency to the US hangs in the balance. US president Donald Trump announced he will send a junior embassy representative to receive the presidency, but president Cyril Ramaphosa has rejected the move. Speaking to SABC News, University of Johannesburg’s analyst Oscar van Heerden warns major issues hang in the balance, including the 30-percent tariff hikes:
Meanwhile, British prime minister Keir Starmer has defended his decision to attend the G20 leaders’ summit in Johannesburg this weekend, saying the event is an important forum for his country. He has been criticised for the number of international trips he has taken, with the trip to South Africa being the 45th country he has visited since taking office. Starmer says the international issues that will be discussed at the summit have an impact on his country, while the G20 nations are important to Britain’s economy.
# The ANC Youth Leagues has suspended its president, Collen Malatji, after earlier reports about tensions between him and secretary-general Mntuwoxolo Ngundle. In a letter to the structures of the league and published on Instagram this morning, Ngundle says the suspension is rooted in claims that Malatji unilaterally convened a parallel meeting and misled structures in terms of his role as president. The parallel meeting allegedly excluded Ngundle and treasury general Zwelo Masilela from preparations for the 27th national congress to be held in Limpopo next month.
# A second suspect has been arrested for this week’s double murder at the Inxiweni Primary School in Tembisa, Gauteng, when a principal and an administrative staff member were shot and killed in the school’s admin block. Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says the first suspect, a 26-year-old employee of the school, was arrested earlier:
# Cricket: The first day of the first Ashes Test in Perth ended with the Aussies on 123 for the loss of nine wickets, five of which were taken by captain Ben Stokes. England made up for what was considered an average performance after Stokes won the toss and decided to bat. They were all bowled out for just 172, with Mitchell Starc claiming a career-best seven for 58. With just one wicket still standing, Nathan Lyon and Brendan Doggett will resume play for the Aussies tomorrow.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-35-cents and the euro at 19-rand-98-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-64-cents and Bitcoin trades at 82-thousand-180-dollars.
