In this bulletin:
# Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says five arrests were not carried out from 121 political killings dockets
# Three men are killed in another gang-related shooting in Mitchells Plain
# And cricket: Dewald Brevis says his huge SA20 price tag won’t change him
# KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says five arrests were not carried out from 121 political killings dockets that had been transferred to the national police head office in Pretoria. Mkhwanazi told the Madlanga commission that although the dockets were scanned and audited before handover, the instructions to arrest suspects in these five cases were not executed:
# The police’s anti-gang unit in Cape Town is investigating another deadly shooting after three men, aged 20, 23 and 32, were killed in Westridge, Mitchells Plain, last night. A police spokesperson says it is believed the shooting is gang-related. The latest killings came on the eve of today’s debate in the provincial legislature on the growing tide in violent crime in the Western Cape and its devastating impact on communities. Several shooting incidents believed to involve several rival gangs were also reported in Manenberg yesterday.
# Transport minister Barbara Creecy has directed Transnet’s National Port Authority to renew leases for tenants at Durban’s Island View precinct and guarantee access for the Central Energy Fund. The 25-year-old directive seeks to balance transformation with energy security, creating space for emerging black players. The department’s spokesperson, Collen Msibi, confirmed that Creecy has also authorised a new Single Buoy Mooring and renewed Astron Energy’s Cape Town lease to strengthen refinery-linked energy security:
Moving abroad:
# US president Donald Trump said he would designate “Antifa”, a shorthand term for “anti-fascist” used to describe far-left groups as a major terrorist organisation. For years Trump has blamed Antifa for various wrongs, from violence against police to being behind the US Capitol riot on 6 January 2021 that aimed to block Joe Biden’s presidential election win. Trump called Antifa a sick, dangerous, radical left disaster. Antifa has no head or national organisation and seemed to be made up of independent, like-minded groups.
# Cricket: Proteas batter Dewald Brevis says his huge price tag in the SA20 won’t change him and he will still go out on the field and try to have fun. The 22-year-old was snatched up for a whopping 16.5-million-rand by Pretoria Capitals during last week’s players’ auction after playing for defending champions MI Cape Town in the first three seasons. Brevis, who grew up in Gauteng, describes his time in the Mother City as very special, but is super excited to return to his hometown.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-33-cents and the euro at 20-rand-51-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-65-cents and Bitcoin trades at 117-thousand-170-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-669-dollars-46-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-57-cents a barrel.
