BULLETIN 3 September 2 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Giwusa demands the re-nationalisation of Sasol
# Extremely dangerous veld fire conditions to persist in three provinces
# And Trump wants to send troops to Chicago to fix the crime problem
# Union Giwusa demands the re-nationalisation of Sasol and the expropriation of all private oil companies, refineries, and retail networks. President Mametlwe Sebei says these assets must be consolidated into a new, powerful South African National Petroleum Company. He says this entity’s mandate will be to break the import parity scam and slash fuel prices for the people, not generate profits for shareholders:
# The Institute of Race Relations says the mounting job losses resulting from companies cutting back their operations or leaving the country entirely are concerning. ArcellorMittal SA is set to shut down by the end of September, resulting in three-thousand-500 job losses. Ford Motor Company SA also plans to cut 474 jobs at its plants in Pretoria and Gqeberha. IRR’s Makone Maja says the massive constraints of doing business in South Africa must be thoroughly reviewed and addressed:
# The South African Weather Service says extremely dangerous veld fire conditions are expected to continue in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng. It says conditions are such that the Fire Danger Index is above 75. The Tshwane Emergency Services’ spokesperson, Lindsay Mnguni, says the very hot and windy conditions may result in the development of runaway and veld or bush fires and strengthen existing fires:
Moving abroad:
# US president Donald Trump vowed to quickly resolve what he called the crime problem in Chicago, hinting at sending troops into what he branded the most dangerous city in the world. He posted on his Truth Social platform that he will solve the crime problem fast, just like he did in Washington, DC, referring to his deployment of National Guard reservists last month. Trump repeatedly threatens to send US military personnel into Democratic strongholds like Chicago and Baltimore, cities he has slammed as high-crime zones flooded with undocumented immigrants.
# Cricket: England fast bowler Jamie Overton will probably miss the Ashes Series against Australia after announcing an indefinite break from Tests. His participation in the series looked certain after playing in the final Test against India in July, but he says playing in all three formats was taking its toll. Thirty-one-year-old Overton says it’s no longer possible to physically and mentally commit fully to Tests as well as white-ball cricket. England’s white-ball captain, Harry Brook, describes Overton’s decision as a surprise, but says he respects it.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-62-cents and the euro at 20-rand-54-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-63-cents and Bitcoin trades at 111-thousand-428-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-534-dollars-91-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-91-cents a barrel.
