In this bulletin:
# Justice Madlanga slams the Supreme Court of Appeal for a failure of justice in the Please Call Me Case
# ActionSA refers minister Macpherson to Parliament’s Ethics Committee over alleged racist remarks
# And rugby: Andy Farrell makes two changes for the Lions’ final Test against Australia
# Retiring acting deputy chief justice, Mbuyiseli Madlanga, has ruled that the Supreme Court of Appeal committed a fundamental failure of justice in handling the ‘Please Call Me case’ between inventor Nkosana Makate and Vodacom. Delivering his final judgment before retirement, Madlanga said the SCA failed to assess key facts, ignored evidence, and offered inadequate reasoning. He concluded that these flaws breached the right to a fair hearing:
# ActionSA says it has asked the chairperson of Parliament’s joint committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests, Lusizo Makhubela, for an investigation into deeply offensive and racially charged remarks made by minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson. ActionSA’s Alan Beesley says on two separate occasions, he referred to ActionSA supporters outside court in Pietermaritzburg as amaphara and hobos:
# Police are calling for responsible social media reporting around the kidnapping case of businessman Jerry Boshoga. The 46-year-old was last seen in November after attending a meeting in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion. Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, says in the last 24 hours, unverified social media accounts have shared misleading and false information claiming that Boshoga’s body has been found. She says the investigation into his kidnapping is still at a very sensitive stage, and Boshoga has not been found dead or alive:
Moving abroad:
# Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky says the world should push for a regime change in Russia, arguing that president Vladimir Putin otherwise would continue to destabilise its neighbours. Zelensky also told a conference marking 50 years since the signing of the Helsinki Final Act on respecting borders and territorial integrity that Russia’s war machine should be fully blocked. He says it’s time to confiscate Russian assets, not just freeze them, confiscate them and use them to serve peace, not war.
# Rugby: British and Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has made two changes to his starting lineup for Saturday’s third and final Test against Australia in Sydney. Blair Kinghorn replaces James Lowe on the left wing, while lock James Ryan comes in for Ollie Chessum, who moves to the bench that has a six-two split between forwards and backs. The Lions secured the series with a dramatic last-gasp 29-26 victory in Melbourne last week, but Farrell’s side is determined to finish with a 3-0 series whitewash.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-12-cents and the euro at 20-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-96-cents and Bitcoin trades at 118-thousand-552-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-305-dollars-81-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 71-dollars-71-cents a barrel.
