# Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube says economic growth is crucial to expanding employment in the education sector. She was speaking in Pretoria ahead of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s engagement with the youth in the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention and Employment Stimulus programmes. Ramaphosa will visit schools and training centres, showcasing public-private partnerships that provide skills and job opportunities. The minister highlighted the importance of investing in the sector to eliminate unemployment:
# The South African Reserve Bank is investigating Young Women in Business Network Mutual Bank and its founder, Nthabeleng Likotsi, for allegedly providing false information during the bank’s application. The probe follows a nine-million-rand fallout with Afribiz Financial Services, which claims it paid for a 26-percent stake in the mutual bank, but received only a two-percent offer instead. Likotsi denies wrongdoing. Experts say an investigation may impact both her legacy and the credibility of South Africa’s mutual banking sector.
# Government urges all citizens to stay safe and dress warmly as heavy rain, snowfall, and cold weather conditions continue in some parts of the country. People are advised to stay indoors where possible and limit travel and outdoor exposure, especially for the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses. Government spokesperson Kgomotso Ranoto says drivers are urged to drive with caution as roads may be icy and slippery:
# Stocks rose today as the latest round of China-US trade talks moved into a second day, with one of US president Donald Trump’s top advisers saying he expected a big, strong handshake. There is optimism the negotiations, which come after Trump spoke to Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping last week, will bring some much-needed calm to markets and ease tensions between the economic superpowers. The meeting in London will look to smooth relations after Trump accused Beijing of violating an agreement reached at a top-level meeting in Geneva last month.
# Rugby: Fans will now have an opportunity to participate in the Fantasy Rugby Championship, which is headed by New Zealand Rugby in collaboration with South Africa, Australia and Argentina. This marks the first official fantasy game for the southern hemisphere’s premier international competition, the Rugby Championship. The opening round on August 16 will see the Springboks host the Wallabies and New Zealand face the Pumas. Fans will have a chance to draft their ultimate 15 best players and compete for bragging rights throughout the tournament.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-71-cents and the euro at 20-rand-23-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-91-cents and Bitcoin trades at 109-thousand-442-dollars.
