# South Africa has told the International Court of Justice that Israel is acting with impunity in the occupied Palestinian territories, deliberately blocking aid to Gaza. This week, the court is holding public hearings on a request for an advisory opinion concerning Israel’s obligations under international law. Delivering oral submission in The Hague in Netherlands, Department of International Relations and Cooperation director-general Zane Dangor says this has driven the region toward famine and constitutes genocide and apartheid:
# South African National Parks is urging the public to strictly adhere to all hiking and mountain bike trail closures and to avoid the Silvermine, Tokai and Boyes Drive areas of Table Mountain National Park. SANParks says it is continuing to fight wildfires in collaboration with its strategic partners whilst monitoring flare-ups. Spokesperson JP Louw says another flare-up occurred in Chapman’s Peak around the early hours of the morning and is burning towards Hout Bay:
# Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged to beat the United States in Donald Trump’s trade war after winning Canada’s election and leading his Liberal Party to another term in power. China responded to Carney’s victory saying it was open to improving ties, while the European Union chief said the bloc will work with him to champion free and fair trade. Following a campaign dominated by Trump’s tariffs and annexation threats, Carney promised to chart “a new path forward” in a world “fundamentally changed” by a United States that is hostile to free trade.
# Mixed Martial Arts: The sport will make its Asian Games debut next year when Japan hosts the continent’s premier sporting event. Cricket was also formally approved for inclusion at the Games during a meeting in host city Nagoya. Mixed Martial Arts will feature six events in its Asian Games debut and be classed as a discipline under combat sports. As many as 15-thousand athletes could compete at the Games from 19 September to 4 October, more participants than the Olympics.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-53-cents and the euro at 21-rand-9-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-80-cents and Bitcoin trades at 94-thousand-96-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-313-dollars-17-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-71-cents a barrel.
# And finally, Ryan Coogler’s horror film Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan remains top at the box office in its second weekend of release. The film has already made more money at the US box office alone than Disney’s Snow White. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith came in second, followed by Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2. The Warner Brothers video game adaptation, A Minecraft Movie, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, dropped to fourth place with Sony’s R-rated horror film Until Dawn in fifth.
