# The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has confirmed the recovery of five bodies following severe flooding in Lamontville, in eThekwini. Disaster Management teams retrieved the remains of two adult men and three children who were swept away into a canal during heavy rainfall earlier this morning. The department’s Senzelwe Mzila urged residents in low-lying areas to seek higher ground as flooding risks remain high:
# The Morebeng Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo has granted bail of two-thousand-rand to a 49-year-old police sergeant who faces two murder charges. The National Prosecuting Authority’s provincial spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, says Constance Sathekge allegedly shot and killed her son, Khotso Sathekge, and his girlfriend, Naledi Mmonwa, in Botlokwa following a disagreement earlier this month. Malabi-Dzhangi says the son died at the scene, while Mmonwa succumbed to her injuries in hospital:
# Consumer inflation increased to 3.2-percent in January, the first calculated according to an adjusted basket of goods. The data from Statistics SA shows meat prices have decreased for the third month in a row, and the price of cereal products increased at an annual rate of 3.8-percent. Stats SA’s chief director of price statistics, Patrick Kelly, says the prices of some staple foods have increased further:
# At least 46 people were killed when a Sudanese military transport plane crashed into a residential neighbourhood on Khartoum’s outskirts. The Antonov aircraft went down near Wadi Seidna Air Base, one of the country’s largest military hubs in Omdurman, northwest of the capital. The army, which has been at war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, says the plane crashed during takeoff, killing and injuring both military personnel and civilians.
# Soccer: Pep Guardiola has denied the task of rebuilding Manchester City is the biggest challenge of his managerial career as his team battles for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
